Those of you who’ve followed my blog through December will know that Eddie is our Elf on the Shelf. Eddie regularly gets up to Elf Mischief and often brings treats and fun things for the children to enjoy. Inevitably, we are sometimes stumped for ideas for our elf. I often search online for new ideas to keep the children interested and excited.
I stumbled across the rainbow magic idea over the weekend and knew the children would love it. It’s so simple, costs only a little and it’s something they can get involved in.
The idea is, you make a circle with coloured skittles around the outside of a plate. The plate needs to have a lip or a raised rim for this to work, and the skittles need to be right at the edge of the plate. The elf leaves a note with instructions. I simply wrote:
Just add warm water & watch the magic!
You then pour warm water into the middle of the plate so that it spreads out and rises up to about half the height of the skittles.
Then, you watch and wait. Within a few seconds, the colour from the skittles starts to spread towards the middle of the plate.
My 10 year old immediately said “Wow, a rainbow”. They loved it, it was such a success. I’ve seen videos online of this being done, it’s definitely worth a search. The trouble is, as my daughter said, it smells so good you just want to eat skittles! Definitely buy a few extra!
Eddie will leave us in a few days when he goes back to the North Pole on Christmas Eve. My daughter is dreading him going, she loves having him here and for her it’s quickly become and important part of the Christmas tradition. I’m hoping he’ll have a little more fun with us before he goes.
I’d so recommend Elf on the Shelf if you don’t already do it. We bought this one, it comes with a hard-backed story which we’ve read so many times I think I know it word for word now!
