3 tips if you’re thinking of investing in antique jewellery

I’m a huge fan of making extra money, and I’m always on the lookout for new and interesting ways to do it! One of the things I’ve been looking into recently is investing my money, and this is something I plan on doing over the next couple of years. But as well as investing money in the usual stocks and shares, I’ve been looking into investing in antique jewellery.
Obviously, if this was something you wanted to get involved in, then there’s an awful lot you need to learn before you even think about spending any money. How do you tell which jewellery is worthless compared to which pieces are worth a fortune?
3 tips if you’re thinking of investing in antique jewellery
You’re going to need to put in a lot of research before you start to think about parting with any money, but these tips will help you to pick out the pieces that are worth investing in.
1. Look out for big designer names
Designer names are always going to mean money. Look out for big names such as Cartier, Chanel and Tiffany.
But you’ll need to develop a keen eye for how to spot designer items, it’s not always as easy as you might think! Some of these designers hide their marks in tiny places on pieces of jewellery, so you’ll need to carry out your research so that you know what to look out for. A Cartier necklace may only contain the tiniest identifying mark on one link for example!
2. Shadow an expert
Probably the only way that you’re going to learn is by learning from an expert. This may mean that you need to take on an apprentice role and learn the trade right from the floor up. If you want to make a success of investing in antique jewellery then this is definitely worth doing!
If this isn’t an option, then spend some time in specialised jewellery auction houses. You will quickly get a feel for the types of pieces that are sought after and sell well, and the kinds of prices you can expect them to bring. Not only will you learn a lot very quickly, if you’re anything like me then you’ll also love the excitement that goes on within the auction house!

3. Make sure precious stones have certificates of authenticity
Investing in jewellery that features precious stones is a really popular way to make a return on investment for professional investors. Stones such as diamonds will generally only every increase in value. But it’s important to make sure that the stones are genuine. Many investors keep hold of items for a minimum of five years to allow the jewellery to increase in value enough to make it worth selling on.
Any buyer looking to buy a piece of antique jewellery featuring a diamond will want proof that it’s the real deal. A certificate of authenticity shows that it’s a genuine item and gives you far more chance of selling on for a profit.
