Best Selling Printables on Etsy

Helping you to make money from home is one of my favourite parts of running this blog, and there are so many great ways to side hustle and bring in an extra income! Etsy is quickly becoming one of the most popular way for people to boost their income and an Etsy printables business could be the perfect way for you to boost your income from home. But as with any new venture, if you want to create a successful shop, then it’s a good idea to research the best selling printables on Etsy before you get started.

What are the best selling printables on Etsy?

Printables can be a great way to make some extra money. But as with any new business idea, it’s really important to do your research. There’s no point designing lots of pretty printables if people just aren’t buying them.

Thankfully, printables are really popular these days, and despite there being an abundance of free printables, people are prepared to pay for the right product.

There are lots of different options when it comes to making money from printables, so I’ve put together a list of some of the best selling printables on Etsy to help you to see what sells.

What is Etsy?

In case you’re one of the very few who hasn’t heard of it, Etsy is an online global marketplace for handmade, vintage and custom items. Etsy was founded in America back in 2005 and has continued to grow and become one of the most popular sites for crafters and digital designers to sell their products. Etsy sellers can quickly set up their Etsy store and showcase their products to the world. As well as being a popular place to sell homemade craft items and physical products, Etsy has also become popular with sellers of digital downloads and printable products.

How do you open an Etsy shop?

Before we dive in and take a look at the best selling products on Etsy, let’s take a look at how to set up your Etsy shop.

First of all, you’ll need to go to the selling section of the Etsy site and click on “Open your Etsy shop”.

How to open an Etsy shop

You will then be asked to either sign in or register a new account. If you already have an account that you use to buy products on Etsy, then you can use the same account to create your own shop.

Then, you’ll need to sort out a few settings such as what currency you’ll operate in and the default language you want for your shop. You will then be asked whether you see your new shop as a full-time job or just a part-time hobby. Don’t worry too much about this question, it won’t have any impact on anything so just answer to the best of your ability.

It’s then time to give your new shop a name. Don’t overthink this. I’m guilty of spending far too long thinking of names for things and it really doesn’t matter all that much. You can also come back and change your shop’s name in the future too.

Creating your first listing

Once you’ve got the basics of your shop sorted out, it’s time to create your first listing!

Create a listing on Etsy

There are lots of different sections to fill in, and in order to make your products stand out against the competition, do try to be as thorough as possible.

If you’re aiming to sell some of the best selling printables on Etsy, then it’s likely you’ll want to choose digital as your product type.

Etsy listing details

Take some time to think about your product description as this is used by Google so you want your products to rank as highly as possible. Think about any keywords you might want to target and make sure you use those here.

Then, just follow the rest of the instructions and you’ll be able to list your first item on your Etsy shop. You’ll need to fill in your billing details and set up your shopfront which is really easy to do.

Make sure you set up two-factor authentication to give your account as much security as possible. Two-factor authentication means that every time you attempt to log in, you will also have to enter a code that you can access via an app on your phone. I use it for lots of my logins now and I really do recommend setting it up straight away in order to keep your products and your profits safe.

How much does it cost to run an Etsy shop in the UK?

Etsy charge sellers a few different fees so make sure you double-check what applies to your products before listing. You need to be sure that you can make a profit but at the same time, you need to price your items competitively, especially in the early days.

  • Listing fee. Etsy currently charge a flat fee of $0.20 when you list an item. This is charged regardless of whether your item sells or not.
  • Auto-renewal fee. When you list an item, you will be asked if you want it to be automatically relisted once it’s purchased. If you choose to do this, you will be charged $0.20 each time.
  • Transaction fee. Etsy charge 6.5% of the sold price on each transaction once an item sells. This is taken from the total sales price of the item including postage and gift wrapping.
  • Payment processing fee. When you receive a payment through Etsy, you will be charged a payment processing fee. This is separate from the transaction fee and varies from country to country. Take a look here for current payment processing fees.

For digital files, you can choose to either have your products available for instant download or made-to-order depending on whether your products need any personalisation adding to them.

Making a success of your Etsy shop

Whether you’re looking to make a profit from the best selling printables on Etsy or you plan to sell handmade physical products, it’s always a good idea to promote your shop in order to bring in sales.

If you already have a blog, then you can use that to share your new shop. One thing that I’ve seen others do is to create some free items to begin with before then offering other items for sale. You could offer a free ebook for example, or just have some free printables available on your blog.

You can also use social media to share your products too. There are lots of groups on Facebook where you can share your items, just make sure you check the rules for each group as some will only allow you to promote your items on certain days of the week. Instagram has also become a great place for small business owners to showcase their products. You can use reels on your main grid, and everyone can now also add links to Instagram stories which is a gamechanger for smaller accounts.

So, if you’re thinking of selling printables or digital downloads on Etsy, you need to know what sells. You can then start to create your printables and list them on your Etsy shop. Once you’ve done that, selling your products can be a great passive income stream. You only need to do the work once and you’re ready to go.

I’ve linked in the search results for each of these popular printables, so you can just click through to see the types of products available in each category.

How to make your printables

The good news is that you don’t need to be a graphic designer in order to make a success of selling printables on Etsy. In fact, you don’t need any graphic design skills at all! There are plenty of low-cost and even free pieces of software you can use to get you started.

I am a huge fan of Canva for making free printables as well as for creating images for my websites and for social media. I have a Canva pro account which allows me to make lots of changes to images as well as giving me access to more stock photos, but you may find that the free version is enough for you, particularly in the early stages.

The Canva Templates options are great for getting started. You can choose from options such as posters and then work through the many categories available to see which one will work best for your particular printable product. For example, you could choose motivational poster templates to get you started.

You can then edit the colours and the wording and even the fonts and backgrounds to get the look you’re working towards.

The only slight drawback with using a program such as Canva is that you may find that other printable sellers use the same thing. Just be sure that you make your products unique so that you stand out against the competition.

Do your research

If you want to make a success of selling on Etsy, then treat your new venture as a business right from the very start. Once you’ve spent some time looking into the best selling printables on Etsy, you could also actually purchase some of the products from your competition. This will give you an insight into how the whole process works from a customer’s perspective. Make a note of what you think the seller did well, and what they could improve on, and implement those findings on your own sales process.

As well as researching the digital items you plan to sell, you should also look at the pricing of the competition too. As a new seller, you’re going to need to get a foot in the door and you’re unlikely to succeed if your products are priced higher than those of more established sellers. The best sellers will be those with high rated feedback.

One of the things I love about Etsy is that you can actually see how many sales a shop has made. So, you can see which different designs are selling well before deciding on the best printables to create for your own business.

If you’re hoping to make a success of selling on Etsy, then opening up a printable shop is a great, low-cost way to get started. Unlike selling physical products, you don’t need to buy any stock or pay to store any stock. You just need what many of us have already – a computer and internet access and you’re ready to go. Once you’ve created your printable items, your Etsy shop pretty much runs itself and becomes a great form of passive income. Of course, you can put more work in and create new printables along the way as your business grows, but there’s nothing nicer than watching money come flying in whilst you’re out enjoying your day.
