All business owners, whatever their business may be, will face stressful situations and often, without focus or procedures in place, they can spiral out of control. 

Being aware of those common issues that every business owner can face is beneficial. It gives you the opportunity to put contingency plans in place and to make more informed decisions. Starting your business may have been a dream, and no business owner wants their idea to flop. So here are some of the stressful situations any business owner can find themselves in and how you can combat them.

The customer experience 

The customer experience is vital to your business, so how do you ensure that you get this right? It may not come across as a stressful situation for your business because the customer experience should be a big priority to you. But at the same time, there is pressure to get it right. The customer experience can often be about the personal touch, and ensuring you deliver products or services on time. Keeping customers informed of the whole process and ensuring they feel valued. It is the small things that make a big difference, but without customers, you don’t have a business. 

Dealing with complaints 

But while the customer experience is important, you may find yourself in the stressful situation of having to deal with a complaint. The truth is, you won’t be able to make everybody happy. Complaints can be damaging if they are not dealt with correctly, especially because customers can share their views and opinions online for the world to see. Review websites and social media can be your best friend or your worst enemy, depending on the situation with your customer. Customers are less likely to share their positive experiences, it is a fact. But will happily tell everyone about a bad experience. Dealing with complaints is essential, and handling them in the correct way can often turn a negative into a positive. While it can be stressful you can use this to your advantage in the long run. 

Coping with cashflow and not getting paid 

Cash flow can be a big worry for any business, and as you want to remain in the black as often as possible when invoices are not paid on time, things can take a turn for the worse. Cash flow will rise and fall as and when you have things paid out and paid in. The best advice would be to be aware of payment windows that people set when it comes to sending an invoice out. Some will say payable in thirty days, which means not only will trade benefit from that when it comes to paying you, but you can benefit from it when it comes to paying out. It is always a good idea to be fully aware of your trade receivables. You may be wondering what is trade receivable. This is where you may have given products and services to the trade rather than customers. Customers would pay straight away, trade can often be given those payment windows. You will benefit in one way, but it can be stressful if you haven’t been paid yourself. Understanding where you stand with cash flow can also help you when it comes to things like realistic forecasts and projections for your business, and will enable you to stay abreast of the situation. Having a good accounting system that you can access anytime can help with this. 

Being relevant online 

In a digital world social media is taking over, and it is amazing news for businesses of any size as this can be such an easy way to get your products and services in front of potential customers and clients. However, if you are not engaged on social media or seem to not be relevant, then people can lose interest fast. It is a constant battle with new algorithms which means that social media strategies are now more important than ever to help you stay relevant online, and to help you continue to grow your reach and audience. This can be a stressful situation, especially if you are not familiar with what to do and how to share relevant content as well as promote your business. Consistency is key so once you have that presence online, be that on social media and with your website, then that is a step in the right direction. 

When to expand 

Expansion is always going to be on the cards, but often the big question is what is right for your business? This is when you need to think about expanding products and services, versus gaining more stock and opening up a retail premises or moving out of your home into an office location. What is right for your business? It can be stressful to navigate, but looking back over business plans may point you to where you want to be. This is an exciting time for any business and to be in the position where you are thinking of expansion is amazing. But it can be stressful when you are unsure of what the right move to make is. Take time to consider all of your options. 

Assets in your business

Whether it is a fleet of cars or vans, a company vehicle you use, business premises, or stock, it can be stressful when things go wrong. Damage to business premises and assets like vehicles, stolen or damaged stock. Insurance and protecting yourself can be one of the best ways to alleviate the potential stress you will feel if things go wrong. Having the foresight to protect yourself is the best thing that you can do.
