Dreaming of a home in the sun
Over the last few months, I’ve been talking a lot to a work colleague who is currently in the process of selling up his home in the UK and moving his family over to Portugal. Talking to him along with our recent holiday to Crete has made me daydream a little about spending more time abroad. The sunshine and the laid back lifestyle are pretty appealing I have to admit!
Dreams of moving abroad
Moving abroad has been something I’ve thought about from time to time. In fact, when we just had our eldest son, we spent some time seriously looking into buying a bed and breakfast in the South of France. I think at the time we were incredibly naive about the whole thing and in all honesty it never would have worked at that time in our lives. I for one was very immature back then!
Talking to my colleague has made me think again about whether moving permanently abroad is something that I would want to do. And the truth is that I don’t think I would!
We’ve recently spent a week in the sunshine on the Greek island of Crete. It was the perfect, relaxing week and it was so nice to escape the wet and windy Autumn weather in the UK for some lovely warm sunshine.
Owning a second home abroad
Personally, I don’t think I would be able to settle abroad on a permanent basis. Despite the often rubbish weather, I actually do like living in the UK. I enjoy the different seasons, I love our lush green countryside, and we’ve chosen a really lovely little town to bring our children up. I know that if we moved abroad, I would very quickly become incredibly homesick! As well as all of the things I love about living in the UK, all our family are close by too, and I would definitely struggle to be so far away from them. So overall, I’m happy here.
BUT, I would definitely be OK with owning a second home abroad, and Portugal would be high up there on my list of favourite places to buy.
I’ve spent a lot of time looking at Portugal when my colleague has been showing me where he’s hoping to buy and I have to admit that it does look incredibly tempting. There is some beautiful property for sale in Portugal.
One of the main attractions to living abroad is the idea of spending more time outdoors in the fresh air. During the winter months, we just don’t get that option over here. I would love to be able to just jump on a plane with the kids and know that we had a home from home in the sunshine. A lot of the adverts for property for sale Algarve show off stunning outdoor spaces where I could just imagine the kids playing and me unwinding with a glass of wine at the end of the day!
At the moment, we are busy working hard to make and save money to buy our forever home in the UK, but buying a second home abroad is something I would absolutely love to achieve at some point in the future.
