Five tips to save money as a higher education student
There are many things to consider when making a decision to pursue higher education. Apart from finding the right school, one has to think of tuition costs, scholarships and explore avenues for financial aid. Also keep in mind,if you are pursuing a four-year degree,it is much more expensive than tuition alone.
Since there is no one-size-fits-all solution, here are five things to keep in mind if you wish to pursue your desired career path, simply by planning ahead and setting some affordable realistic goals.
Research well
Whether you want to become a designer,an engineer or a veterinarian, research technical and college school websites to look for different classes and programs that you are interested in attending.
This will help you to realise your educational goals and also determine how much that education will cost and put you in the perspective as to how to begin the process of saving and getting admission in the schools you are intending to attend.
Start saving early
Challenge yourself to set aside money early, whether it is spare change or income from a part time job in school, especially if you wish to earn an advanced degree as it takes particular careful planning.
So whether you plan to get an online masters degree in public administration or a manageable aerospace engineering degree from a top university, saving for higher education well in advance is a must. The longer your planning horizon, the easier it will be for you to plan and pay.
Apply for financial aid
The Office of Student Financial Assistance is the best place to see the options available to you for higher education. Complete the FAFSA form, which opens on October 1 each year,to be eligible for federal state and university financial aid programs.
Many students use more than one type of financial aid,but you must first check the one which works best for you:
- Scholarships that are specific to an area of specialization
- Grants that need not be repaid and are awarded on basis of need
- Low interest educational loans that are required to be paid back, albeit with interest
- Need based, non-resident waivers that are given to first time in college students
Work part-time
Even if you have enough money for food and accommodation as a student,it is always better to boost your savings account by earning extra cash. There are plenty of opportunities to find a flexible job while in college.
Look for campus-based jobs that cater to your study schedule or explore online jobs and freelancing opportunities. Each style of job will allow you to work for limited time and make money by the side.
Take advantage of student perks
Take advantage of on-campus amenities like gym, student health care, museum etc and avoid spending money elsewhere.
Carry your student ID wherever you go and avail of discounts wherever available. You will be surprised how much money you can save with these perks when moving about town.
