Working from home is something that many people would love to be able to do. But how do you spot the genuine work from home jobs from the scams? With so many adverts on social media promising flexible hours that fit around the kids and family life, it can be quite tricky to weedle out the genuine opportunities from the MLM and pyramid rubbish.
I’m incredibly fortunate to be able to work from home and it’s something I’ve been able to do for over 10 years now. In that time I’ve been both self-employed and employed on a work from home basis. At the moment, I’m employed 26 hours per week as a proofreader which is a home-based position, as well as working self-employed in my media and blogging business.

Blogger
Blogging really is a viable option if you want to work from home. In fact, my blogging income has regularly overtaken my employment income and blogging is something I really love to do. This is one of my all-time favourite genuine work from home jobs that anyone can do.
How does it work?
Blogging is really easy to get into, but it does take a while to get to the point where you’re earning a consistent income.
Bloggers share their thoughts and information online through their blog/website and often via social media.
What do you need to get started?
You will need a few things to get started as a blogger:
- Internet access
- Laptop/computer
- A niche (eg. family finance, food, parenting)
That’s pretty much it.
How much money can you make?
The earning potential with blogging is infinite, and there are bloggers making an absolute fortune just from blogging. Don’t expect to make money quickly from blogging though, it takes a lot of time and effort to get the point where you’re earning a regular income.
But, it can really be worth the effort, money-blogger Michelle Schroeder-Gardner published her income report for 2018 showing a staggering $1,500,000 during the year!

Vlogger
It seems that everyone has their own YouTube channel these days, even the kids are getting involved. But did you know that running a YouTube channel could actually be a really profitable business?
How does it work?
YouTubers make their money in a variety of ways. They may get sponsorship deals from brands who pay them to promote or review their products online, and they will probably also make money through adverts that play during their videos.
What do you need to get started?

- A web cam
- Laptop/computer
- Mobile phone or camera for videoing
- Editing software (you can find free options until you’re established)
How much money can you make?
In the early days, you’re unlikely to make much money. But as you’re subscriber numbers grow and your views increase, you will start to see a steady growth to your income.

Virtual Assistant
Many bloggers branch out and become Virtual Assistants as a way to increase their income whilst they build up their blogging income.
Full-time bloggers and many small businesses will use a Virtual Assistant (VA) to carry out admin tasks that they don’t have the time or the expertise to undertake themselves.
How does it work?
A VA is usually self-employed and can be asked to undertake a really wide range of tasks. These could include:
- Social media management
- Responding to emails
- Creating content
- Creating images
- Sourcing paid/sponsored work
- Chasing invoices

As a proofreader, you may be employed and work for a specific company, or be self-employed and have a range of clients. Proofreaders check through content to ensure that it’s factually and gramatically correct and that it’s free of spelling errors.

You may not need anything to get started as a proofreader. Some proofreaders are sent physical copies of writing to check through and return with any amendments. However, it’s likely that you’ll be more successful if you’re able to work online.

How does it work?

Many companies now recruit home-based customer services operatives to answer any queries. It’s far more cost-effective for them than running large call centres.
You may be involved with taking calls, answering emails and speaking directly to customers via live chat.

These roles are usually paid hourly, with the average being around £9-£10 per hour.
Freelance Writer

As a freelancer, you’ll work on a self-employed basis, creating content for a variety of clients. This could be creating regular blog content, or even ghost writing an entire novel.
What do you need to get started?

How much money can you make?
Established writers can charge pretty much what they want, but initially, you’ll probably be looking at around £12 per 500 words. Bear in mind that you will need to carry out some research for each article too.
Transcriber
How does it work?
Transcribers watch videos or listen to audio recordings and write down what’s being said. Sounds easy enough!
What do you need to get started?

- Good understanding of the English language
- English qualifications are beneficial
- Word processing software
- Fast typing skills would be beneficial
How much money can you make?
If you’re able to transcribe in multiple languages, then you’ll be able to charge much more for your services. On average, a transcriber with just English as their language can expect to earn around £750/month.
Ironing Service
With many of us leading really hectic lives, we’re often on the lookout for someone to help us out with household tasks. More and more people are using services such as these because they simply don’t have the time (or the inclination) to do these tasks themselves.
How does it work?
Running an ironing service is pretty self-explanatory, you would be paid for ironing for your clients.

So, it is possible to find genuine work from home jobs in the UK, you just need to do a little bit of research before diving in. Be aware then as a general rule, any so-called job that requires you to pay a registration fee, is usually MLM and not worth getting involved with.
