How to Minimise Stress When Moving to Birmingham
Moving to Birmingham? Moving anywhere is a stressful endeavour. Take a look at our tips to help you lower that anxiety.
Take your time
There are very few things people actually need to survive the night. Understand that not everything needs to be in place right away. If you want to take your time with it, you can store your stuff until you’re ready for it. If you’re looking for somewhere to put your stuff, Safestore have units in Birmingham that will keep your items protected and safe while you set up your home.
If your home already has all the decorating set up as you would like it, you can put your bed and a couple of boxes of clothes in place, and as long as you have a toothbrush, you’re good to go to work the next day. Take a box out of the storage unit every day and unpack slowly. You’ll be able to really think about where everything can go, and you won’t need to rush.
If you’ve bought a project that needs done, well, that’s not going to happen overnight. Keep all your pots and pans in a storage unit while you rip out and reconstruct the kitchen. Put the sofa away until the living room carpet is down. It’s likely you’re going to be living out of a few rooms, maybe one at a time on rotation, so putting away the bulkier or unnecessary items until the house is done can only help.
Rent a truck/movers
We cannot fully express how hard this is going to be to do on your own. If you’ve got a few willing friends, we commend you. They are owed a pizza or even a few beers for their time and effort, but there’s no doing it alone. Even practically. How are you going to push that mattress up the stairs without anyone at the top lifting it?
You’ll save a lot of stress for yourself to simply hire a moving team. It’s not the most expensive thing and they are likely to get it done a lot quicker. They want it over with even more than you do, because they’ll have another job to get through. What would usually take all day will now take a few hours.
Of course, if you are low in funds, you can hire a van or truck for the day. Our little city cars aren’t likely to take a sofa far, so it might be necessary to rent a van or truck. But the perk here is that you don’t need to hire movers to drive it. You can, if that would make you stress less, but if money worries you, simply rent the van and drive it yourself.
Donate what you don’t want
Moving is a great time to clear out, and we would argue that’s a great way to reduce stress already. Kind of. It depends on the type of person you are we guess. But even if you have a hard time letting go of some items, seeing the free space you have having cleared everything will make you feel a lot lighter. Focus on that when you’re sorting through everything.
But think outside the box. No one’s saying the common charity shops don’t need items, but so do your local communities. Donate books to the local library, toys to the after school clubs or dog kennels, kitchenware is needed, as are simple things like socks that you wouldn’t think to buy in a charity store.
There are even charity shops that will take furniture, making them some decent profits. If you are thinking of a swap while you’re between moves, make a stop at the furniture charity store to drop off your old cabinet, sofa, etc.
