How to Save Money on College Books
Buying college books is always connected with significant expenses. I remember that I used to struggle indeed at the start of every term: I had to spend a big part of my income on books, and besides, I needed to handle other expenses, such as paying for accommodation, food, and similar, leave alone cheap essay writing service with fast delivery e.g. SmartWritingService.com when you need an urgent paper to be handled ASAP by professional academic writers. While I was trying to get all the possible books and other materials
First, I was trying to buy all the books immediately and to get rid of the trouble. With time, however, I was learning from my mistakes. I developed some strategies that can help to save on college books. The sums can be impressive. Here, I am willing to share those strategies with you.
Always Check the Syllabus
I still remember my first term. As soon as the term started, I went to the college book store and bought all the books recommended for every subject I had. I spent almost all my money and had to literally starve for quite a long time.
It was a mistake though. In your syllabus, you will find the titles of the books that are recommended. You need to buy those books only. It saves a lot of money, especially if you check how many subjects you have.
Older and Newer Editions
Newer editions might cost significantly more than older editions. Though, the differences between them might be minor. Therefore, consult your professor whether an older edition can work. If yes, you can save a lot on the price difference. In most cases, an older book edition works in a perfect way and is widely accepted.
Have You Checked the Libraries?
Some books will not be available in libraries, especially if you are looking for a book in a very specialized subject. However, the chances are high that the book is available in the library of your university. If yes, what about using this opportunity at least for some time until you can buy the book? If the book is not in high demand and you can get it any time, you might not want to buy it at all!
Rent the Books instead of Buying Them
The majority of books are needed for one term or one year only. Later, they become useless and just occupy the space. Therefore, I recommend renting books rather than buying them.
There are special services online. It is very easy to find them if you google. The procedure is simple: you choose a book, pay for it, and they send it to you. When you don’t need the book anymore, you send it back. It will be rented to another student. If you understand that you need the book, you can always pay more and buy it.
Buy Used Books
Sometimes, you need to buy a book, not to rent it. A great option to save a lot on every purchase is to buy a used book. Many students don’t need their books after the term is over. They will be happy to get rid of unnecessary things. You, in turn, can get the needed book and save a lot of money.
eBooks as an Alternative to Paper Books
Sometimes, it happens. Your professor accepts the newest book edition only, and it differs from the previous significantly. Old books do not exist or are sold out. You just have to purchase that book doesn`t matter if you have funds for it.
Have you forgotten about the internet? Try to find an eBook. They are much cheaper than paper books, and the content is the same.
This option works under certain conditions. If you can use your laptop or tablet during lessons, thus, you can use the book, there is no problem in buying an eBook. Even if you aren’t allowed to bring your device to the lessons of that particular professor but you need the book mostly to do your homework, an eBook can be a viable option, too.
However, if you need the book all the time during the lessons, and the professor doesn’t like laptops or other devices (it happens, not all college professors are advanced), you need to buy the print version. Another option is to check whether reprinting the eBook can work out, but in most cases, the price is almost the same, and the quality suffers significantly.
Sharing a Book if You Have to Buy It
Even in the worst situation, you can save on books by sharing them with friends. Buying one book together with a friend is a good solution if you share the same room or flat. Then, you won’t face a problem when the book is needed by both of you. Even if you live in different places, you still can share the book if there is enough time between the lessons for everybody to prepare the materials.
However, sharing might become an issue if your lessons on the subject are on the same day, and you study in different colleges or on different faculties.
You cannot use every option at any time when you need to buy a new coursebook. However, if you can reduce your expenses at least a little bit, it is going to be good for your student budget.
