It’s been over a year since we first faced Coronavirus restrictions here in the UK, and what a year it’s been! For many of us, we’ve spent more time at home with the family over the last twelve months than every before. Whilst there are plenty of positives to this, keeping everybody happy and entertained all day every day has been tough, particularly for those trying to stick to a tight budget. Entertaining the children can be expensive! Even though many attractions have been closed, the temptation to pay to download films or buy expensive video games just to get a couple of hours peace has been strong!

Free online games

I’ve recently discovered – a site that offers a whole range of online games completely free of charge. The kids have really enjoyed exploring the different games available.

One of our favourite games to play is Defense Battle. This game is inspired by the well-known, popular game, Plants vs Zombies, and it has provided us with hours of fun! The aim of the game is to defend your base and not allow it to be attacked.

Battle Defense

It took me a while to get the hang of this game, but my eldest son who’s 14 and knows far more about this kind of thing was able to provide me with some tactics! It soon became a competition between us to see which of us could reach the highest level – safe to say that he won by a mile.

Another of our favourites is Escape Masters.

The aim of this game is to tunnel your way out of prison, collecting coins and other prisoners as you go, until you make your way to the getaway vehicle and move on to the next level. I found this one really addictive and it was really easy for my 6 year old to get the hang of how to control it too.

Final thoughts

I’m sure I’m not alone in admitting that it has been tough to keep everybody happy and entertained over the last year, but I have been very careful of trying to do so without spending much money. Covid-19 created job loss and forced many families to tighten their purse strings. Free online games such as the ones available on are a great way to bring the family together, provide some welcome distraction, and keep a tight hold of the family finances too.

Have a go of some of the games available and let me know what you think!
