Keep your mind active at home without paying a penny

Throughout 2020 and 2021, family finances have really taken a hit. Millions have lost their jobs in the UK because of the Covid-19 pandemic and with furlough set to come to an end shortly, that figure is only likely to increase. This, coupled with isolations and lockdowns, has meant that we’ve been forced to spend more time at home and our mental health has taken a bit of a battering.

I don’t know about you, but when I’m struggling with day to day life, I find that keeping myself busy really helps. I’ve been very fortunate that I’ve kept hold of my job and my business has continued to do well, but I’ve still found the lack of routine difficult during the times when the children and my husband had to stay at home. During those times, we all needed to find distractions where we could, and we wanted to keep our minds and our bodies active.

We took daily walks and joined in with daily YouTube workout videos for our bodies, and we turned to playing card games and doing puzzles to keep our brains occupied. But this is something that we hope to continue now that life is beginning to return to normal. Now we’re all a bit busier again, we’ve still been enjoying playing online games and I wanted to share a few that we’d been particularly enjoying. These are great if you’re looking for activities to do at home that don’t cost a penny.

Hidden Object Games

Our youngest son has really enjoyed playing hidden object and spot the difference games recently. He’s particularly enjoyed a Pirate themed hidden object game we found online. Pirates are one of his favourite things, and he’s always really determined to find all of the hidden objects – he’s actually really good at it.

In this game, you have to find all of the objects shown at the bottom of the screen within the picture before you can move on to the next level.

Sudoku

Sudoku has always been one of my favourite games to play to keep my mind active and give my brain a little bit of a challenge. There are lots of different ability levels available to play, so it’s one for all ages, and you can either buy yourself a Sudoku book if you have the funds, or play the game online, making it accessible for everybody.

Solitaire

A classic but a great game all the same! Solitaire is ideal for those times when you just want to wind down and relax a little, it’s not too difficult, but it does still make you use your brain in order to complete the game.
