Renovating your hallway on a budget

Renovating your hallway on a budget

Many of us have been forced to spend more time than ever before in our homes over the last year or so. This has all been down to the global Covid-19 pandemic. Whilst there is light at the end of the very long tunnel thanks to the release of various vaccines, we still have a fair way to go before we can get back to life as we knew it. Spending all of this extra time in our homes has led many people to start to renovate and improve their living arrangements. But, as much as we want to get these home improvements under way, money has been tight for many people! Thankfully, there are ways that you can make big improvements to your home without spending a fortune.

It’s always a good idea to focus on one area of the home at a time. If you try to do everything all at once, then you’ll probably end up creating a huge mess and not actually getting anything finished. Whilst the hallway might not seem like an important area to revamp, it’s actually a great place to start.

The hallway

OK, so at the moment, you’re not going to be having visitors. But the day will come when you are able to welcome family and friends back into your home again. The hallway is often the very first place that your visitors will see, and it’s the area that creates that all-important first impression.

Think about the colour schemes you have in your hallway. Are they bright and welcoming or is it currently dark and dingy? If you don’t have any natural light in your hallway, then it’s really important to use light, bright colours. Take a look at some colour schemes to see what works well. There are lots of free resources to use online. Buying some paint isn’t that expensive and the chances are that you’ll be able to do the work yourself which really helps to cut the cost. You could also think about adding a mirror or even doors with panels of frosted glass in order to get a little extra natural light in the hall.

Hallway

As well as the walls, could your stairway do with a bit of a makeover? You can buy staircase parts online which is perfect in these days of social distancing, and even just changing the spindles can have a huge impact on the overall look of your hallway. You might want to get some professional help with this, but you could also do a little research and figure out how to do the work yourself too – saving you even more money.

If you’re fortunate enough to have windows in your hallway or landing, then avoid heavy or dark curtains so that you get the very best of the natural light shining into your hallway. It’s a good idea to use window cleaners regularly so that your windows remain as clean as possible – natural light is really important for our mental wellbeing as well as helping to improve the light within our homes too.

Finally, it’s time to think about the flooring. If your hallway is a high traffic area, then it’s a good idea to go for a flooring that can be easily cleaned rather than carpet. There are lots of light coloured laminates, engineered wood flooring and vinyls to choose from, and you can often find cheap remnants in carpet showrooms that are perfect for using in hallways.

If you want to give your hallway a freshen up and you’re on a tight budget, then even just changing one of these things will give it an instant new lease of life.
