1. Start with a plan
The most important tip to keep in mind while going grocery shopping is to have a list of items that you need so that you keep yourself from spending money on unnecessary things. Figure out the foods you will be making and then list down the ingredients needed for them. Stick to your list and your bank will thank you later.
Once you have a plan, you should always write a shopping list before you go shopping. Otherwise, you will end up buying many unneeded things. In the next section, you will find cheap alternatives to buy at the grocery store.
2. Look for cheaper alternatives of food
There are expensive and cheap options in pretty much every food category. You need to look for the cheaper alternatives of food, however, bear in mind that we are not suggesting you to end up compromising on the quality.
If you’re doing keto on a budget, we have a list of foods people generally opt for, and ways how you can significantly reduce how much you spend purchasing them.
Cheese – cheese is perhaps the most common fat source people rely on. Some people often get talked into buying specialty cheese which often turns out to not be worth it. So, stick to regular cheese and grate it yourself to save money.
Fish – fish not only is an amazing source of fat, it is also rich in protein. Although fish is expensive, you can always go for canned fish to cut down the cost. Canned fish is just as dense in nutrients as the regular fish but a lot cheaper.
Poultry – while buying poultry, lean towards purchasing chicken thighs or legs as they are not only cheaper but also rich in fats as opposed to chicken breasts.
Meat – the same thing applies to meat as poultry. The fatty cuts would be ribs, shins and neck. To save a bit extra, get these cuts directly from the butcher instead of the supermarket.
Vegetables – vegetables are a crucial element of keto diet. Instead of purchasing low-carb vegies in bulk, buy them separately as you wouldn’t want them to deteriorate. You can also consider buying frozen veggies which don’t rot like the regular vegies.
These foods are very easy to prepare quick family meals, and you will be surprise by how many different dishes you can make from this list.
3. Buy meat or poultry a day before your supermarket restocks
Like we mentioned earlier, you should buy meat from your butcher, however if that option isn’t suitable then buy from your supermarket a day prior to when it is supposed to restock because you’d likely get a discount.
4. Purchase the in-season produce
Fruits and vegetables often cost a lot. The produce that is currently in season will cost you way less than the one that isn’t. In addition to that, you can rest assured that it is fresh and nutritious.
5. Scour the web for better deals
If you can’t find good deals at your grocery store then shop online to save up. Items especially like nuts, different oils and spices usually cost less on the internet than they do in the stores. Alternatively, there are many money saving apps you can try to find best deals.
It’s not hard to follow keto diet when you’re on a budget. Applying these tips will definitely cut down your grocery bill and keep your diet more sustainable.
