Sometimes it can feel like you’re banging your head against a brick wall when you’re trying to get the family together for some quality family time. There’s always someone who doesn’t want to join in, particularly when there are teenagers in the house! Whatever you do it feels as though you’re constantly pulling the kids into spending time together when it would just be lovely if everybody actually wanted to join in and do some activities as a family.
If your family is anything like mine, then everyone has a completely different idea of what counts as “having fun”. In our case, our daughter is incredibly sporty, our oldest son would be quite happy to live in a cave (as long as it had heating and his xbox), and our youngest son is just a bit of a loon!
So, believe me, I know how difficult it can be to find something that suits everybody. You may have family members with different levels of ability, or disabilities, making it even more difficult but even more important to cater for everyone.
Board games, although they’ve been around for decades, are a fantastic way to get the family together, no matter what the time of year!
If you do have family members with disabilities, then board games can be extremely beneficial for them as they’re a great way to improve confidence, sociability, keep the mind active, and so much more!
Top Board Games to Get the Whole Family Together
As a family, we can be guilty of saving the board games for Christmas, but I think they’re actually a great way to spend time together at any time of year. They’re a low-cost activity that the whole family can join in with and they mean that you’re spending quality time together, away from technology and away from the stresses and strains of everyday life.
There are thousands and thousands of board games available these days, so there really is something for everybody. But these are a few of my favourites!
You can’t beat monopoly! There are lots of different versions around at the moment, including the hugely popular Fortnite Monopoly – perfect for enticing a reluctant teen to join in and play with the rest of the family!
Another oldie but goodie. Scrabble is a great game for all the family and with Large Print Scrabble, it’s easy for even the visually impaired amongst us. Scrabble is a really fun way to get our brains ticking and our minds working hard! It’s also a great way to learn new words and see just how incredibly well your children are with their vocabulary, ours always surprise us!
Not strictly a board game, but Uno is a firm family favourite of ours, and it’s one that all of our children have been able to join in with from a really early age.
Uno is a great way to help to teach children about colours, numbers and taking turns, something that young children in particular often struggle with.
We love the Brainbox games, and there are so many different themes to choose from!
The main aim with these games is to remember as much as you possibly can. You are given a set amount of time to look at a card before you have to turn it over and are quizzed on what you saw. It’s a great game for helping to keep the brain working hard!
Dominoes are a classic! My children have all loved playing dominoes and over the years we’ve accumulated a few different sets – we have The Simpsons, Peppa Pig, Paw Patrol and the classic Dominoes in a small wooden box. Dominoes are a great game for helping children to develop their strategic skills without them actually realising they’re learning anything at all! Dominoes tends to be a quick game, so if you know you’re short on time, then this is a great one to play together.
If you choose carefully, and put a little thought into the type of games you buy, then board games really can bring the whole family together. They can be a great way to iron out the age differences and have everybody play on a fairly even level. They’re perfect for keeping everybody entertained on wet, grey days and once you’ve bought them, they’re a really cheap way to keep everybody happy when money’s a little tight.
