Home-made crafts are big business and there’s so many different things you can make these days!
I’ve seen a big rise in the popularity of personalised items – sports bottles, bibs, soft toys – there are so many things you can make and sell for a profit.
If you’ve crafty bones, then there’s nothing stopping you setting up your own sideline from home.
How to start your own craft business
First of all, you need to know your audience. Think about the products you’re planning to make and then think about who’s likely to be your customer. You need to be aware of how much money they’re going to be prepared to pay and factor this into planning your products.
You should also spend some time researching your competition. What products are they selling and how much are they selling them for? You need to make sure youo don’t price yourself out of the market, but at the same time make sure you’re still making a profit.
You also need to research suppliers. This might take a little trial and error as you test out new products.
Start off small
Initially, you’ll probably want to test the water with a few products to see which ones sell well and which offer the best profit.
You need to be confident that you can meet supply and demand.
Play to your strengths. If sewing is your thing then focus on that. You need to be confident in your ability and your talent will shine through. If you love your products, then your customers will love them too.
Where to sell your products
There are lots of options when it comes to selling your products.
Local craft fairs are a great way to get your name out there and once you start to attract customers, word of mouth can be invaluable. It’s worth keeping an eye on local facebook groups for events near you where you can get a stall. You might want to think about getting some banners and business cards made to make your business really stand out.
Also, set up a Facebook page including photographs of your products, prices and how people can order from you.
You can also sell your products online – think about setting up and Etsy shop or selling on eBay.
