Creepy-Cute Zombie Muddy Buddies (A Spooky Halloween Snack Mix!)

Every Halloween, I like to whip up at least one snack that’s equal parts creepy and cute, and these Zombie Muddy Buddies definitely deliver on both fronts. If you’re a fan of classic muddy buddies (or puppy chow, depending on what you grew up calling it), you’re going to love this spooky twist. It’s still sweet, crunchy, and totally addictive, but with eyeballs, “brains,” and “bones” mixed in for extra Halloween fun!

I had so much fun getting creative with this recipe. The base is your trusty Chex mix coated in green candy melts and powdered sugar, but then it gets a Halloween upgrade with all kinds of eerie little add-ins. Round pretzels become tiny brains, square ones get dipped in white chocolate to look like bones, and there are plenty of candy eyeballs sprinkled throughout. It’s the kind of snack that makes everyone do a double take before reaching for more.

This mix is always a hit at Halloween parties, movie nights, or tucked into treat bags. You don’t need any fancy tools or baking skills, just a few bowls, some melting chocolate, and a little imagination. It’s playful, festive, and just the right amount of spooky for the season.

Ingredients

Step-by-Step Instructions

You can find a printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

1. Start by separating the different pieces from the Chex mix. Place the square pretzels and squiggle breadsticks in one small bowl, and the round pretzels in another.

2. Add the remaining Chex mix to a large bowl.

3. Melt the green chocolate melts in a microwave-safe bowl, heating in 30-second intervals and stirring in between until fully melted.

4. Pour the melted green chocolate over the Chex mix in the large bowl.

5. Use a spatula or gloved hands to mix until all of the Chex mix is coated.

6. Sprinkle the powdered sugar over the coated Chex mix and mix again until everything is evenly covered.

7. Spread the mix out onto a sheet of parchment paper to dry.

8. Melt the white chocolate using the same method as the green chocolate.

9. Lay out another sheet of parchment paper.

10. Dip the square pretzels and squiggle breadsticks into the white chocolate using a fork, then place them on the parchment paper. These will represent the “bones.”

11. Melt the pink chocolate using the same method as before.

12. Dip the round pretzels into the pink chocolate and place them on the parchment paper to dry.

13. Transfer any leftover pink chocolate into a piping bag (reheat it for 15–30 seconds if needed).

14. Cut a small hole in the tip of the piping bag. Pipe a small line around the top of half the round pretzels and press multi-color eyeball sprinkles into the chocolate.

15. On the other half of the round pretzels, pipe zigzag lines all over to create a “brain” effect. Let them sit for 5–8 minutes to harden.

16. Use the remaining pink chocolate to attach small eyeball candy sprinkles onto the green Chex squares. Add as many eyes as you’d like.

17. Let everything set for about 5 minutes to dry.

18. Once dry, combine all the chocolate-decorated pieces with the rest of the Chex mix.

19. Serve and enjoy!

Tips for the Perfect Zombie Muddy Buddies

  • I’ve found that using gloves when mixing the chocolate and Chex mix makes cleanup so much easier, and keeps your hands from turning zombie green.

  • Don’t rush the drying time. I know it’s tempting to dive in, but giving everything a few extra minutes to set helps keep the pieces from sticking together.

  • When melting the chocolate, stick to 30-second bursts in the microwave and stir between each round. It helps avoid burning (been there, done that).

  • If your piping chocolate starts to harden mid-decorating, just pop the piping bag in the microwave for 10–15 seconds, game changer.

  • Go wild with the eyeball sprinkles. I like to stick a few on the Chex mix at random so you never know who’s staring back at you in each bite!

  • Don’t worry about perfection, zombies are messy, and that’s part of the fun!

Get Creative!

  • Try using different colored melting chocolates – purple, orange, or even black would be super fun for Halloween!

  • Swap in seasonal cereals like Chocolate Chex or Cinnamon Chex for a little twist on flavor and color.

  • Want to add more “body parts”? Toss in gummy worms, candy bones, or mini marshmallows dressed up with food coloring.

  • Use Halloween-themed sprinkles or edible glitter to make the mix extra festive and eye-catching.

  • If you’re making this with kids, let them decorate the pretzels with their own eyeball-and-brain designs, it turns into a fun (and slightly creepy) edible art project!

  • Package the mix in little cellophane bags with spooky tags for Halloween party favors or trick-or-treat surprises.

Serving & Storing

  • I love serving this mix in a big Halloween bowl with a scoop, makes it easy for guests to help themselves without diving in hands-first.

  • For party favors or classroom treats, scoop the mix into clear treat bags and tie them with a little Halloween ribbon. Instant spooky snack success!

  • Store any leftovers (if there are any!) in an airtight container at room temperature. It stays fresh and crunchy for about 4–5 days.

  • If it’s a warm day and you’re worried about the chocolate melting, pop the mix in the fridge for a few minutes before serving to keep things set.

  • This also makes a fun movie night snack, just pour into individual bowls and turn on your favorite Halloween flick!
