How HDMI Cables Work

Audio and visual connections in this day and age have been simplified to become consumer-friendly. We have come a long way from the black and white tube television of the 1950s and 1960s to the flat, thin 4k televisions that have become not only commonplace but quite affordable.

The biggest reason for that is HDMI cables. These cables have become the standard for transmitting audio and visual signals at a higher resolution rate. To better understand HDMI cables, it helps to know how they work.

HDMI Cable Structure

The structure of an HDMI cable is simple enough. Even better, they are largely the same whether for personal entertainment or business use. Each end has the same connector attached, making it virtually foolproof to use. Between those connectors is a cable of varying lengths, carrying those audio/visual signals to the connected device.

Some HDMI cables even come with a ferrite bead casing. These casings are ideal for blocking out potential signal interference. In medical and construction settings, these HDMI cables are necessary to ensure that there is no reduction in the transmission of audio/video signals. The cable itself is generally made of a heat and flame-retardant sheathing. This high-density polymer ensures that there are no abrasions and no degradation of the wiring. This helps to extend the longevity of each cable.

Data Transfer

At the heart of every HDMI cable is the ability to transfer data from one device to another. What makes HDMI cables so popular is the ability to transfer audio and video signals at the same time without degradation to the quality. Old standards like RCA and DVI often required two separate cables to do this transfer and, even then, the quality was often susceptible to degradation.

HDMI is able to transfer at high-resolution rates for video while also transferring theater-quality sound all at once. With current HDMI standards, there is an extra layer of protection that prevents unrecognized devices from initiating a data transfer of their own.

HDMI Pin Layout

There are three HDMI standards currently: HDMI-A, HDMI-B, and HDMI-C. Type A has 19 pins in its configuration and even has pin outs on the inner walls. The pin arrangement fits the lower and upper pins securely together and can be identified by number.

The type and pin layout often indicate the function and capabilities of that HDMI cable type. Some are able to display 1080p or even 4k video quality depending on both the cable and the device in question. Nearly all modern televisions have multiple HDMI inputs.

HDMI Benefits

HDMI was created to provide a newer, better standard for transferring audio video with less complex wiring. Prior to HDMI, it would be needed to plug two or even three cables into the right place in order to get both audio and video.

In addition to simplicity, it also created cohesion between devices. Prior to the implementation of HDMI, different devices would commonly have different connectors. It would be frustrating to need different connector types depending on the display and device. HDMI has since become the clear standard with more than 8 billion HDMI-compatible devices in circulation. Whether it be gaming consoles, streaming devices, Blu-Ray players, or virtually any other type of device, HDMI is going to be the standard.

Really, the most important benefit of using an HDMI cable is its transfer quality. High-end HDMI cables can transfer an abundance of data at very high speeds without signal interference or degradation. These standards generally apply to short distances – connecting household devices – though there are special HDMI cable types that are more ideal for transmitting signals over hundreds of feet.
