How to Care for Your New Designer Bag

Are you eyeing a hot new designer bag for yourself? Maybe you’ve already taken the plunge and purchased the bag; either way, you want to be sure that you care for it properly so you can enjoy it for years to come. There’s nothing worse than getting excited about a new fashion piece only to have it ruined a few months later. Here we’ll take a look at the best ways to care for your new designer bag regardless of the style or material/fabric.

Keep the Dust Bag and Original Boxes

While you may be used to throwing your purse or handbag into the closet without much care, a designer handbag needs more delicate treatment. The first tip is to make sure you keep the original box and dust bag it came in. These are excellent for storing the bag whenever it’s not in use. You also want to be sure that your handbag is stored in an upright position. If that’s not possible, laying it flat with the handle(s) outstretched is best. Storing it in the box and dust bag means dirt, debris and dust won’t collect on the bag. It also protects it from getting scuffs and marks from other items stored against it.

Ensure the Bag Keeps Its Shape with Acid-Free Tissue

If the bag has a defined shape to it, you want to be sure that it remains and doesn’t start slouching or get dents in it. The best way to achieve this is to stuff it with acid-free tissue paper when not in use. You can still place it in the dust bag and box after stuffing it.

Gucci bags for women are a great example of designer bags that tend to have a defined shape. These designer handbags from SSENSE come in such popular styles as totes, shoulder bags, belt bags, pouches and more. Using acid-free tissue will ensure they keep their shape and look like new.

Humidity Can Wreak Havoc on Your Bag

One of the worst things you can do for your new designer bag is to expose it to humidity. Moisture of any kind is extremely hard on fabric including things like leather and suede. Depending on the bag you purchased and where you got it from, you may have been given a silica gel product to use in it. The product will absorb any excess moisture in the air and protect the bag itself.

If you have a sizeable designer bag collection, it’s wise to invest in a dehumidifier to use where you store them.

Bring a Bag Hanger with You

How many times have you been out at a restaurant only to put your purse on the floor? While you may not think this is a big deal, in reality, you are at risk of damaging and/or staining it. Instead, bring a portable bag hanger with you that simply attaches to the table. You can then hang your bag rather than put it on the floor.

Purchasing a designer bag is a fabulous way to update your wardrobe and add sophistication. But to keep that bag looking fresh and new, you must take special care.
