right hand itching

Does your right hand itching mean you’re about to win the lottery?

There are some superstitions or beliefs that become so popular and so widely recognised that we have to begin to wonder whether there’s some truth in it. That’s definitely the case for your right hand itching leading to a lottery win. Some people refer to it as right-handed luck. But, in some cultures, an itchy right hand isn’t quite so lucky.

What do itchy palms mean when it comes to money?

Itchy palms has long been associated with superstitions, particularly superstitions that revolve around money.

Many believe that an itchy right hand or palm means you have money coming your way, whilst an itchy left palm means you’re about to lose some money. I know which I’d rather have!

How to use the right hand itching theory to your advantage

Have you ever heard of manifesting? Those who believe in manifesting say that if you want something to happen, you have to visualise it happening and that way, your dreams will come true. With that in mind, whenever you get itchy hands, you need to visualise that money landing right in your hands. Hold out your right hand, and picture large sums of money sitting there.

As well as manifesting, you can also use positive affirmations to encourage wealth to come your way.

When has right hand itching actually led to real money?

Whilst we’ll never know whether itchy hands really were indicating that money was on its way, or these people just had an itchy skin condition, there have been some instances where money has followed an itchy right hand.

In 2019, a woman from Baltimore bought a scratch card after three of her daughters all told her they’d had itchy hands that day. She walked away with $50,000!

In 2018, a Michigan resident also bought a lottery ticket after noticing itchy hands, she won a huge $2,000,000 jackpot.

In 2016, a Canadian woman won £45,000,000 again after experiencing itchy palms.

So, maybe there is some truth in the theory after all.

What does it mean when your left-hand itches?

An itchy left hand is often believed to mean that you’re about to lose money or have to pay some money out. This could just mean you have bills to pay so it’s not necessarily time to panic that you’re about to lose all your money.

If you believe that your left palm itching signals that money is about to leave your hands, then there are a few precautions you could take:

  • Avoid taking unnecessary financial risks
  • Steer clear of gambling
  • Don’t offer to lend money
  • Make sure all your bills are paid to avoid unexpected charges.

How did this itchy palms idea come from?

There are all kinds of theories surrounding palm itches so it’s difficult to pinpoint where they all came from. Some beliefs are deep rooted into religions whilst others have simply come about over the years.

Other ways to bring money into your life

As well as itchy palms, there are plenty of other ways that some cultures believe you can bring money into your life.

Tea leaves

There are lots of superstitions around money and tea leaves. One is that if you throw loose tea leaves onto the fire you will keep poverty at bay. Others believe that the same will happen if you sprinkle tea leaves around your home.

Find a penny, pick it up

Find a penny

Pick it up

All day long

You’ll have good luck!

So, if you see a penny lying on the ground, be sure to pick it up as it could lead you into money. Some people believe that you should only pick the penny up if the penny is lying heads side up, picking up a penny that’s tails side up could bring bad luck.

Throw your money away

No, I’m not suggesting you chuck your hard-earned cash in the bin. What you could do, however, is throw a penny into a wishing well or fountain. Water has been seen as sacred for centuries and in years gone by, people believed that spirits of good fortune lived in water. This led to the tradition of throwing a penny into water and making a wish.

Money attracts money

When my mother-in-law bought a new purse for me, she added a 5p piece in the purse too. She told me that it’s tradition to do this as money attracts money. So, by giving me the purse with money already inside, this would bring me the gift of more money!

Christmas pudding

It’s been a British tradition for centuries to place a silver coin inside a Christmas pudding. Whoever receives the silver coin in their bowl should keep the coin as this will bring them wealth in the coming year.

Don’t be a whistler

Apparently, some believe that if you whistle inside your home you’ll blow your money away – I’m not prepared to test out that theory!

Lucky eight-legged friends

Some believe that a spider crossing your palm or hiding in your pocket means you’re about to come into some money.

Look out for shooting stars

Keep an eye on the night sky and whenever you see a shooting star, say “money” to bring money your way.

What could itchy palms mean medically speaking?

For those of you who don’t believe in any of this common superstition, there could be a medical reason behind those itches. We’re not medically trained so please don’t use this as a way to diagnose a medical condition, but here are a few common reasons for itchy hands:

  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Dermatitis
  • Hives
