Italian Chicken Pasta Recipe – Chicken Pesto Pasta

When I think of comfort food that satisfies both my hunger and my soul, one dish always comes to mind: Chicken Pesto Pasta. This recipe has become a staple in my kitchen, and it’s the kind of meal that feels like a warm hug on a plate. There’s just something about the creamy pesto, tender chicken, and perfectly cooked pasta that makes every bite feel like a little piece of heaven. Whether I’m cooking for my family or having a quiet dinner alone, this dish always hits the spot.
It was my daughter who first brought pesto into our house. I’ve no idea why I’d never tried it before! She had eaten at a friend’s house and had Pesto Pasta there for the first time. Needless to say, she absolutely loved it and came home practically begging me to go out and buy a jar of pesto sauce. From there, my Chicken Pesto Pasta recipe was born – it quickly became a regular feature on our weekly meal plans.

The beauty of this recipe is that it’s simple, yet packed with so much flavor. The combination of basil, garlic, and parmesan in the pesto blends perfectly with the chicken and pasta, creating a balanced and satisfying dish that feels both elegant and homey at the same time.

What I love most about this recipe is how adaptable it is. You can make it your own by adding vegetables, using different types of pasta, or even adjusting the pesto to your taste. It’s perfect for a weeknight dinner, but it’s also fancy enough to serve when entertaining guests. Every time I make this, I’m reminded of how the best meals are often the simplest ones – especially when they’re made with love and a little bit of creativity in the kitchen. I’m excited to share this recipe with you, and I hope it brings as much joy to your table as it has to mine.

Ingredients:

  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup basil pesto (store-bought or homemade)
  • 12 oz penne pasta
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Cherry tomatoes, halved (optional)
  • Fresh basil leaves, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Season the chicken breasts with salt and pepper.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the chicken until golden brown and cooked through, about 6-7 minutes per side. Remove from skillet and slice into strips.
  3. Cook the penne pasta according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add the pesto sauce and cook over medium heat until warmed through.
  5. Add the cooked pasta and sliced chicken to the skillet and toss to combine.
  6. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese and add cherry tomatoes, if using.
  7. Garnish with fresh basil leaves and serve immediately.

How to Store Leftovers

  • Cool the Pasta: Allow the chicken pesto pasta to cool to room temperature before storing to avoid condensation and sogginess.
  • Use an Airtight Container: Store leftovers in an airtight container to keep the pasta fresh and prevent it from drying out.
  • Refrigerate: Place the container in the refrigerator where it will stay fresh for up to 3-4 days.
  • Freeze for Longer Storage: If you want to keep leftovers longer, you can freeze the pasta. Just store it in a freezer-safe container or zip-top bag for up to 3 months.
  • Reheat Gently: Reheat leftovers on the stove over low heat, adding a splash of water or extra pesto to help restore its creamy texture. Alternatively, you can microwave it in 30-second intervals, stirring in between.
