Lessons we can learn from The Notebook Movie

Adapted from the novel “The Notebook” by Nicholas Sparks, this movie follows the story of Allie and Noah who first met as teenagers. We follow the ups and downs of their relationship as they’re forced apart by Allie’s parents only to meet again years later and fall in love all over again. It’s a tale of true love and tragedy and you can’t help but feel moved by their story. But there are some valuable life lessons we can learn here too.

Follow your heart

Allie (played by Rachel McAdams) and Noah (Ryan Gosling) fall in love as teenagers, but they are forced apart by Allie’s parents, who feel that Noah isn’t a suitable match. There is a big class divide here and Allie is forced to turn her back on true love because her parents don’t approve.

Of course, as a teenager, it can be very difficult to stand up to your parents, but true love will always win through.

Never give up on your dreams

Whilst they’re apart, Allie and Noah still dream of getting back together and setting up home. When fate finally brings them back together, they dream of living the perfect life together, and Noah works hard to make that dream a reality. He renovated a run-down house for them, pouring all of his love for Allie into the project.

Working on the house runs parallel to Allie and Noah building up their relationship, with the hope that both the house and their love will last a lifetime.

Be honest about your feelings

It’s always better to be honest about our feelings, no matter how hard that might be. If Allie had been honest with both herself and her parents in her earlier years, then their relationship may have survived despite her parents interference. The only person who knows how you feel is you, not your parents, not your friends and not your extended family!

Hold those important conversations face to face

Noah tried to keep in touch with Allie by writing to her, in fact he writes to her every single day for a year constantly telling her how he feels. But Allie’s mother intercepts all of the letters, leaving Allie to think that Noah has moved on without her.

It’s always a good idea to have important conversations face to face so that you can share your feelings first hand without anybody else being involved.
