Must-Do Moves Before Spending a Windfall
Receiving a financial windfall is a nice surprise, whether it’s a relatively small amount or a lot of money. There are several reasons you might suddenly come into some money, including receiving an inheritance or life insurance payment, or perhaps winning some money. Wherever your money has come from, you need to think about what to do with it before you start spending. It’s smart to take some time to consider the best use of your money and how you improve your financial situation with your windfall. Take a look at some of the steps that you might find useful before you spend your money.

Assess Your Current Situation and Goals
It’s a good idea to begin by taking stock of your current financial situation and what your goals are for the future. Do you have any debts that you would like to pay off? Is there anything that you’re saving for, such as a down payment on a house that you could pay for with your newfound wealth? Being realistic about how far your money can go is important. Where can you make the most difference to your finances and to your life as a whole? Perhaps your windfall is enough for you to have a change in priorities.
Consider Paying Off Debts First
If there’s one thing that could make a big difference to your life, it’s paying off debts. If you have debts that are high-interest, in particular, or that are long-term, you could save yourself a lot of money by paying them off. Paying off some or all of the debt that you have could be the right thing to do, and it might be the best way to give your financial situation a boost. However, it’s not always necessarily the best way to use your money. If you only have a small windfall and it won’t make much of a dent in your debt, it could be better spent elsewhere – even on doing something fun. For example, you might not use your money to pay off a mortgage or student debt. Focus on high-interest debt first.
Get Professional Advice
Before you spend your money, it can be useful to get professional advice on how to handle it. A financial advisor could help you to make decisions about what to do with your money. An accountant can help you to make sure you’re doing everything right where taxes are concerned. If your money is from a legal settlement, you might want to ask a solicitor if there is anything that you need to do that you haven’t already done. Other people likely have more knowledge than you where finances are concerned, especially when it comes to large sums of money.
Look at Ways to Grow Your Money
Having a large amount of money is exciting, and you probably can’t wait to start spending it. But if you simply start spending, it could be gone sooner than you think. Instead of simply spending your money, you can think about how you might be able to grow it. Your money could be used to help you save money in the future, by paying off a debt or helping you buy a new car that doesn’t need as much maintenance as your current one. Or you could choose to invest it so that you can earn interest or dividends, or profit from it in another way.

It might be money that you use to start a business or to invest in your education and earn more in your career. Setting up a business could be a great way to turn a one-time sum of money into a long-term income stream. Or if you don’t want to be a business owner, investing in your career can be a good idea too. Spending money on your education or retraining could mean a big increase in your income potential and an improvement to your career trajectory.
Create a New Budget
Is your windfall enough that you could start living a different lifestyle? You probably don’t want to go splashing your cash everywhere, but perhaps your new money is going to give your regular budget a bit of a boost. It’s still wise to live a modest lifestyle, whatever that may mean to you, so you can consider creating a new household budget. It will help you to decide how best to spend your money and how it might help to improve your life. At the same time, it will give you a realistic look at just how far your money might go and how long it could last you. You don’t want to make lifestyle changes that you won’t be able to maintain.

Do Something Good
As well as using your money to help yourself, think about whether you want to use it to help others. That could mean gifting some money to family or friends, or it might be investing it in a good cause that you really care about. You might give money to charity or even start a small charity of your own if you have sufficient funds to do so. Some people want to make sure they’re doing good with their money.
Don’t Spend Anything for a While
The temptation to go out and spend your money straight away is easy to give into. But it’s best to give it some time before you spend your money. If you wait a while, you’ll have time to think about what to do with it. If you have some debts or expenses that are really important to take care of right away, it might make sense to cover them before they become an even bigger burden. But, otherwise, letting the money sit in your account for a little longer won’t do any harm. Putting it in a high-interest savings account can help you earn a little more while you decide what to do with it.
Check these items off your list before you spend any money from a windfall. You don’t want to regret spending it too quickly.
