Optimising Storage in Small Spaces
I don’t know about you but I feel like we have far too much stuff and nowhere to store any of it. If I don’t stay on top of things, we can very quickly end up living in clutter. I like it when everything has a place; it makes it so much easier to keep the house clean and tidy and everyone knows where their things are. But it’s not always easy, particularly if you have small bedrooms or a lack of storage space in your home. There are things you can do though to make use of even the smallest areas.
The key here is to make use of the space you have. You may have a little area under your stairs that could be converted into storage space, or what about those little alcoves you often have on either side of the fireplace? Those small spaces are perfect to use for storage.
Under the bed storage
One of the most under-used storage spaces is the space under your bed. Obviously, this isn’t going to be possible if you have a divan bed – although you may then have built-in drawers you can use for storage. But, if you do have an empty space under your bed then you can definitely make use of this.
You can buy storage boxes specifically designed to fit underneath your bed and these are perfect for storing all kinds of things. You can even get boxes on wheels making it really easy to pull them out from under the bed.
Maximise your wardrobe space
If you have walk in wardrobe storage then you’ll want to make sure you’re making the best use of the space so that everything is neat and tidy and doesn’t look too cluttered. Most walk in wardrobes don’t have wardrobe doors leaving everything on show. Whilst this can be great for allowing you to see where things are, it can look messy if you don’t keep it tidy and organised. Make use of boxes and consider adding shelving units so that you have plenty of space for things such as shoes and bags as well as adequate hanging spaces for all of your clothes.

If you need to add a wardrobe to a small bedroom, then it’s worth considering a wardrobe with sliding doors. This means you don’t need to worry about having the room to open doors outwards and you’ll be able to fit your wardrobe into a smaller space. It’s worth a visit to a specialist wardrobe retailer to take a look at the different options.
Cupboard under the stairs
The space under the stairs is incredibly versatile when it comes to storage and it’s often overlooked. If the space under your stairs is open, then consider putting a partition and a door there to give you extra cupboard space. We use that space to store shoes, coats, bags and our vacuum cleaner. You can also get bespoke storage drawers built here which are ideal for storing things out of sight.

When space is at a premium, it’s important to make use of what you have.
