The history of snus

The history of snus

You might have seen my recent post all about how you can save money switching from smoking to using nicotine pouches or snus pouches. Snus pouches are quite new to us here in the UK, so I wanted to delve a little deeper and find out about the history of the product and how it came to be so popular in Sweden.

Snus pouches

Just to give a little recap, snus pouches are little pouches that sit behind the upper lip and release nicotine slowly into the body. They’re really discreet to use and a great way to cut back on smoking cigarettes.

Snus pouches are actually a little different to nicotine pouches. The main difference is that snus pouches contain tobacco whereas nicotine pouches don’t. It really comes down to personal preference as to which one works best for you.

The origins of snus actually date back to the 16th century. Back then, people used snuff which they believed to have medicinal properties. Snus is basically a moist version of snuff powder. It can be used loose but it’s far easier to use snus pouches. These have been popular in Sweden and the USA for a number of years as they offer a discreet form of tobacco and nicotine. Smoking is seen as a big taboo these days so snus pouches have become more and more popular over recent years.

Snus pouches are actually illegal in EU countries (except Sweden) at the moment, but nicotine pouches are perfectly lawful. You’ll need to bear this in mind when you’re weighing up your options.

Snus pouches generally come in a choice of flavours just like vaping liquids, which makes them even more attractive to people looking for an alternative to cigarettes.

Have you tried snus or nicotine pouches? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
