The Ultimate Chocolate Freakshake (Loaded with Toppings!)
I’ve always believed there’s no such thing as too much chocolate, and this freakshake is living proof. It’s rich, creamy, and piled high with all the good stuff. I’m talking melted chocolate, scoops of ice cream, mini marshmallows, and chocolate chips, all blended into one over-the-top treat. If you’ve ever wanted to turn a milkshake into a full-blown dessert experience, this is it.
What I love about making this at home is that you can go as wild as you want with the toppings. I like to drizzle melted chocolate inside the glass, then press on bits of blonde or salted caramel chocolate for that extra wow factor. Once you add the shake, it’s fun to pile it high with whipped cream, a sprinkle of marshmallows, and a good drizzle of chocolate sauce. Every sip feels like a little reward.
This shake is the kind of treat I make when I want something indulgent and a little playful. It’s perfect for movie nights, birthday parties, or those days when you just need a chocolate pick-me-up. It’s messy, it’s sweet, and it’s guaranteed to make you smile from the very first sip.

Ingredients
-
1 cup chocolate milk gives the shake its creamy chocolate base and rich flavor.
-
2 scoops chocolate ice cream make it thick, frosty, and extra indulgent.
-
2 tbsp marshmallow add a hint of sweetness and a soft, gooey texture.
-
1 tbsp dark chocolate chips bring little bursts of crunch and bold chocolate taste.
-
½ cup oat milk (any milk can be used) helps blend everything together until perfectly smooth.
-
1/3 cup your favourite chocolate (I used dark chocolate) melts into the shake for that deep, luxurious flavor.
-
2–3 squares blonde or salted caramel chocolate (for garnish) add a fun and fancy finishing touch.
-
Chocolate sauce (optional) gives it that irresistible drizzle to tie it all together.

Recipe Instructions
You can find a printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.
1. Gently melt your favorite chocolate on the stove or in the microwave. While it’s still warm, spread some around the inside and outside of your glass, then drizzle a little along the inner rim.

2. In a blender, combine the ice cream, chocolate milk, and oat milk. Blend until smooth and creamy.

3. Carefully pour the milkshake into your prepared glass.

4. Decorate the glass by pressing shredded blonde or salted caramel chocolate along the edges, then add marshmallows and chocolate chips for extra fun. (You can decorate before pouring in the shake, but I like doing it after so the garnish stays in place.)

5. Finish with a swirl of whipped cream and a sprinkle of the remaining marshmallows, chocolate chips, or a drizzle of chocolate sauce. Serve cold with a straw and enjoy!

Serving & Storing
-
I love serving this shake right away while it’s thick and frosty. It tastes best when the toppings are still cold and the chocolate drizzle is just starting to set.
-
If I’m making a few at once, I keep the glasses in the freezer for a few minutes before pouring in the shake. It helps everything stay nice and chilled.
-
Any leftover shake (if that ever happens!) can be stored in the fridge for a few hours, but it will melt a bit. I like to pop it back in the blender with a handful of ice to bring it back to life.
-
For an extra treat, I sometimes freeze the leftovers in popsicle molds for a quick chocolate fix later.

Variations
-
Swap the chocolate ice cream for cookies and cream or mint chocolate chip for a fun twist on the flavor.
-
Use white chocolate or milk chocolate instead of dark for a sweeter, creamier shake.
-
Add a spoonful of peanut butter or Nutella before blending for a rich, nutty touch.
-
Mix in a shot of espresso for a mocha-style freakshake that’s perfect for coffee lovers.
-
Top it with crushed cookies, brownie chunks, or chocolate-covered pretzels for extra texture.
-
Try blending in a frozen banana to make it a little thicker and naturally sweet.
-
Turn it into a vegan treat by using dairy-free ice cream, plant-based milk, and vegan chocolate.

Substitutions
-
Regular milk or almond milk can be used instead of oat milk if that’s what you have on hand.
-
Vanilla or cookies and cream ice cream work well in place of chocolate ice cream, just add extra melted chocolate to keep that rich flavor.
-
Semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips are great substitutes if you don’t have dark chocolate chips.
-
Caramel or whipped cream can be used instead of marshmallow for a different kind of sweetness.
-
Hot chocolate mix makes a cozy swap for chocolate milk and adds an extra chocolatey flavor.
-
White chocolate or toffee bits can replace blonde or salted caramel chocolate for garnish.
-
Non-dairy ice cream and plant-based chocolate make this an easy dairy-free option that’s still just as indulgent.

FAQs
Can I make this freakshake ahead of time?
I wouldn’t recommend it since it’s best enjoyed fresh. If you make it ahead, the ice cream will melt and the texture won’t be the same. You can prep the glass and toppings in advance, though, so it’s ready to pour when the shake’s done.
How can I make it thicker?
For a thicker shake, add an extra scoop of ice cream or a few ice cubes before blending. You can also reduce the milk slightly until you get your favorite consistency.
Can I make this without a blender?
Yes, but it takes a little elbow grease. Let the ice cream soften slightly, then whisk everything together by hand or use a hand mixer until smooth.
What toppings go best with a chocolate freakshake?
I love adding whipped cream, mini marshmallows, chocolate chips, cookie crumbs, or a drizzle of caramel or chocolate sauce. You can really have fun and make it your own.
Can I use non-dairy ingredients?
Absolutely! Use plant-based milk, dairy-free ice cream, and vegan chocolate. It still turns out just as creamy and delicious.
