What to Consider Before a Big Purchase
With the cost of living crisis beginning to really bite, British consumers will be looking to limit their spending. In some cases, this might be a straightforward matter of dispensing with smaller luxuries. Cutting back on meat, alcohol, Netflix or Sky Sports might all seem sensible. But occasionally, you might be faced with a single big one-off purchase.
Sometimes, purchases of this kind might be unavoidable. But it’s still worth doing a little bit of groundwork and thinking before you put your hand in your pocket. Let’s take a look at what some of that groundwork might consist of.
Is it necessary?
In some cases, the item you’re buying might be a must-have. If you need to get to work, a new car might be a necessity – especially if the old one has broken down. The same applies to things like boilers, ovens and the laptop you’re using for work.
If this is a luxury purchase, however, then the same logic might not apply. Think about whether you really do urgently need this item, and how much you’d be willing to part with to get it.
Do you have the cash?
If you don’t have spare money, or your finances are looking a little threadbare, then it might be time to hold off that major purchase. Look at your existing debts and see whether it might not make more sense to repay some of them. Try to avoid financing large purchases through debt. It can sometimes be a good idea to pay for large items on a credit card – as doing so will provide protection that your debit card won’t. But you should always ensure that the debt is repaid immediately.
If it’s an essential item like a car, which you’ll use in your professional life, then you might consider the interest on debt worthwhile. Just make sure that you aren’t rationalising an irrational spending decision.
Can you find it used for cheaper?
In many cases, a second-hand option makes a lot of sense. This applies to electronics and motor vehicles. You can often pick up a refurbished device that’s just as good as a brand new one, for a significant discount. A used Mercedes is often just as great as a brand new one. Those who sit on the cutting edge must pay a hefty premium!
Consider big sale times
Major retailers often hold big sales at certain times of the year. If there’s a sale imminent, it might be worth keeping your powder dry, in case the item in question ends up discounted.
Give yourself time
If you’re being impulsive, it might be worth taking the time to really think things over. That might mean leaving it a week or so between the idea for the purchase and actually making it. This will give you the time to reflect, and see if your reasons for making the purchase are really worthwhile.
