As a money saver by nature, I always like to make sure that whatever we spend our money on is something that we actually need. I wouldn’t say that I’m stingy, but I am pretty careful with our money. We work incredibly hard for it, so I definitely don’t want to waste it on things that we just don’t need. But, when it comes to keeping the family safe, I’m not sure that you can put a price on that.
It’s a sad fact that crime rates are on the increase. The number of violent crimes reported to police in the UK has increased by 19% in the twelve months leading up to September 2018. That’s a pretty shocking statistic! It’s no wonder that more and more of us are investing in home security systems in order to protect our homes and our families.
I’ve been looking into getting a home alarm system installed and I really think it would be great investment for our own security.

There are lots of different options when it comes to installing a home security system, and you’ll need to do a bit of research into the best options for your home before making a purchase.
The fact is though, that any kind of home alarm system is going to offer you some pretty big benefits.
1. Save money on your insurance premiums
Home insurance is an absolute must for anyone living in the UK. Not only does it offer you peace of mind in case the worst does happen, but if you’ve got a mortgage, then you’ll probably find that it’s one of the conditions of your mortgage. Your mortgage provider will want to be sure that your building is covered in case of damage, and you will probably need to have adequate cover that the cost of rebuilding your home would be covered in the event that the property was completely destroyed.
As well as buildings cover, you should also have contents cover too. The level of cover you need will depend on the value of your belongings.
When you’re hunting around for insurance quotes for your home, you will probably notice that the insurers ask whether you have a home alarm system. If you are able to tick “yes” to this question, then the chances are that your insurance premiums will come down.
2. Peace of mind
I don’t know about you, but I must check every door at least three times before I go to bed. And don’t get me started on how many times I check when we’re going away on holiday.
Having a home alarm system installed would definitely provide some reassurance. I know that I would feel far less anxious about leaving the house empty if we had an alarm fitted.
Another issue that worries many people is the safety of their pets whilst they’re home alone. With many pet owners opting for highly sought after, pedigree breeds, there is always a risk that somebody will try to break into the house in order to steal an expensive pet.
Having a home alarm system installed would give pet owners some reassurance that their beloved pet is safe and out of harm’s way. There are many other alarm systems that can be installed in the home too. One of them is an alarm system that can detect if an accident has happened. These are usually used by elderly people and are known as fall alarms or personal alarms. If you have elderly parents, installing one of these as well as a traditional alarm system can give you peace of mind.
3. Deter intruders
Most home alarm systems are visible in some way from the outside of the home. They may have an actual alarm on the outside of the property, or they may come with signs or stickers that you can put on the doors and windows.
A visual deterrent can have a huge impact on a potential intruder. If they see that you have an alarm fitted, then they are far less likely to attempt to break in.
On the off chance that an intruder either misses or chooses to ignore the warning signs, then the sound of an alarm ringing out is going to make them run a mile.
A home alarm system is a fantastic deterrent and a great way to keep your home and your family safe.
4. Keep an eye on your home remotely
Many home alarm systems allow you to access a security camera remotely. This means that can check up on your home throughout the day to make sure that any pets and belongings are safe and sound.
Security cameras that allow you to record footage are also really handy if you do find yourself the victim of a break in. Actual footage of an intruder entering your home is a huge help to the police.
If you do plan to install CCTV, then make sure that you check out the current government guidelines for the use of domestic CCTV.
5. Alert the neighbours so that the police can be called when you’re not home
The sound of an intruder alarm always gets the curtains twitching, and that’s exactly what we’re hoping for when we install a home alarm system. A house without an alarm system means an intruder can probably sneak in whilst the house is empty without any of the neighbours noticing.
If you’re friendly with your neighbours, then you can let them know when the house is going to be empty, and ask them to call 999 if they hear your alarm going off.
Hopefully, the sound will have stopped any intruders in their tracks, but a quick check by the police is always a good idea.
I know that having a home alarm system will be a great investment for us, not only will it give me some peace of mind, but it will help to protect our belongings and our family.
