5 tips for setting up your own business
One of my proudest achievements so far (apart from the kids obviously) is that I’ve created my own business doing something I love. If you’re a regular reader, then you’ll know that I’m sticking with the day job for now too, but from my blog, I’ve been able to build up a successful online business from scratch, and I’m really proud of that!
As a Mum of three, with no business experience, I really do believe that if I can do it, then anyone can. I’ve learnt an awful lot over the last few years, and if I’d known half of what I know now, I would have got to this point far quicker! So I wanted to share a few tips with you if you’re thinking of setting up your own business, to give you a helping hand on the way up.
5 tips for setting up your own business
Setting up your own business isn’t easy, and there will be challenges and hurdles along the way. But there are things you can do to maximise your chances of building up a successful business.
1. Do something you love
For me, the whole point of building up my own business is so that I can do something I love to do, and choose when and where I work. I’m a bit of a workaholic when I enjoy what I’m doing, but if I lose interest, then I really do struggle to be productive.
In order to create a successful business, you will need to put in lots of time and effort, particularly during the early days. If you don’t love what you do, then you’re fighting a losing battle.
If you have a hobby that you can easily turn into a business alongside your current job, then that’s a great place to start. In an ideal world, every new business needs time to grow before it will make a consistent profit. Keeping hold of a steady job gives you a financial cushion whilst you build your business up.
2. Do your research
Don’t be afraid to talk to your competitors, depending on the type of business you’re creating, they might actually be more than happy to help. When I first started blogging, I joined networking groups and started to talk to other bloggers about what they were doing. I’ve learnt an awful lot from people who’ve been doing this far longer than I have.
As well as learning from your competitors, you also need to understand your target audience. Getting an idea of how you can offer the very best service to your potential customers is essential. Time spent researching your target audience will really pay off in the future. Starting off by defining your customer journey is especially helpful. Once you understand your customer journey, you can tailor your product or service to customer needs. This is a really effective way to boost sales.
Whatever your business, get it right from the very beginning by having a proper business plan. A business continuity consultation is a great way to think about the long-term potential and viability of your business.
3. Consider whether you need premises

I currently work from home, but that doesn’t mean that I won’t need to consider having my own premises in the future.
If you’re going to be selling items, then you’ll need to think about getting hold of some shop space that caters to your specific needs. Think carefully about how much room you’ll need for your items, and how best to display them.
If you’re planning on creating an online sales business, you might still need somewhere to store your stock, so think about the size of the premises you’ll need and make sure you know exactly how much that’s going to cost you. Alternatively, you might want to to look into bonded warehouse options to store your stock until you make a sale.
4. Know your finances
I’m really fortunate with my media business in that I have very few expenses. I have to pay for hosting for multiple sites, and I pay for some mentoring and a few other expenses, but generally there are very few overheads for me.
If you’re going to need premises and stock, then you’ll have a considerable outlay before you’ve even started to make any sales. Make sure that you have the funds to cover this without leaving yourself short.
It might be worth considering applying for a loan to get your business up and running. There are plenty of ways to apply for loans these days and these experts in title loans in Vermont explain that the best way to get a loan approved quickly is to put up a vehical as collateral.
If you are selling products, you need to know your margins, so that you can begin to turn a profit as quickly as possible.
5. Be patient
Rome wasn’t built in a day as the old saying goes. Even with the best franchise opportunities giving you the chance to onboard alongside a reliable and worthwhile formula, it’s essential to put the work in and showcase why you deserve to be in business. Whilst you may be able to visualise where you want your business to be, it will take time for it to get established. Have strategies in place so that everything you do takes you one step closer to where you want your business to be.
If patience isn’t your strong point, or you don’t have the desire to build a business from scratch, you could think about buying a business that’s already established. It’s worth registering your details with a company such as Upward Exits who will let you know when a suitable business opportunity arises.
Set big goals, and then break those down into small tasks so that you’re constantly working on achieving your dream.
Do you have any tips for setting up your own business? I’d love to hear your experiences in the comments.
