5 Ways Students Can Save Money

5 Ways Students Can Save Money

Making your student loan last the full term can feel like a challenge, and many of us don’t want to sacrifice going out with our friends in favour of staying home (though of course, it’s always cheaper to drink at home than it is to drink in the club – especially in a city as expensive as London!)

However, there are things you can do to stretch your pennies a little further without sacrificing the student experience.

Whether you’re in your first year or final year, here are just five ways you can save money as a student!

1) Batch Cooking

Cooking a big meal at the start of the week, protioning it out, and freezing it is often cheaper than cooking something different for every meal.

When you batch cook meals, you’ll also save yourself time throughout the week, not just money. As long as you own a microwave and a freezer, this can be a great way to stretch your student loan a little bit further.

Not only that, but homemade soups and vegetable pasta dishes are not just cheaper than ready meals, but they’re healthier too.

2) Make Use of Student Discounts

Student discounts are a great way to get more for your money, and many brands offer student discounts to university students.

UNiDAYS have partnered with a wide selection of brands and services to offer student discounts to students. Signing up is free and you’ll be able to get discounts on clothing, food, and even gym memberships.

3) Distance Learning

Traditional campus learning isn’t cheap, but there are alternatives that will give you the same level of education for a lot less, and allow you to live at home, saving you money on student accommodation.

Expert providers, such as Anglia Ruskin University, offer a wide range of courses to suit your future career ambitions.

Plus, distance learning offers you the flexibility you’re unlikely to have with a traditional campus university. You’ll be able to set your own timetable, and study on a schedule that suits your own needs, making distance learning ideal for students with other responsibilities.

4) Invest in a Thermos

Many of us can’t function without regular doses of caffeine, after all, making that 9am lecture after a big night out is never a fun thing to attempt.

However, making stops at your local coffee shop every day can really build up. We might all enjoy a Pumpkin Spice Latte, but it’s not the most cost effective way to get that much needed coffee fix.

With a thermos, you can make your hot drink at home and take it with you to class, saving money on those costly coffees.

5) Buy Second Hand Course Books

One of the biggest expenses for you as a student will be your course books, and with so many different modules, this can really start to build up.

Luckily, many course books can be bought second hand from sites such as World of Books. However, make sure you keep an eye on editions, as the information can become outdated.
