Essential Items for a Capsule Wardrobe this Party Season
Christmas is such an expensive time, and the current cost of living crisis is only adding to that! But Christmas is a time for letting our hair down and spending quality time with those we love and care for. Whether you’re planning any festive nights out, or just having a cosy Christmas at home, you won’t need to spend a fortune this year in order to look fantastic.
Having a capsule wardrobe is a great way to keep costs down. With just a few, carefully chosen items, you can create multiple looks to suit whatever plans you have this party season. Here are the items I think are a must-have for every wardrobe this Christmas.
A Party Dress
Party season means party dresses. A sparkly dress is perfect for both Christmas and New Year’s Eve – don’t be afraid to use the same dress for both, particularly if you’re on a budget!

If sparkly dresses aren’t your thing, then the classic little black dress is a great alternative, and incredibly versatile. You can dress a black dress up for nights out after wearing it in the office during the day, or you can dress it down by adding a chunky jumper over the top for a more casual look during the day.
Black Boots
Every winter capsule wardrobe needs a pair of black boots. Boots are incredibly versatile and can be worn with pretty much any outfit. Thigh high boots are perfect for colder weather and look great with a mini skirt or dress. Boots can be worn both during the day and for a night out, so you can get a lot of use from just one item.
Opt for black boots rather than brown or other colours so that you can pair your boots up with lots of different outfits.
Chunky Knits
When the weather’s cold, there’s nothing nicer than wrapping up in a chunky knit cardigan. Cardigans are perfect for wearing over dresses – button them up for a casual, daytime look, then remove for a more glamourous night out look.

Chunky knitted cardigans also look great with jeans or leggings for days when you’re pottering around at home or just hitting the shops for the January sales. They’ll also help you to keep warmer when you’re at home if you’re trying to cut down on using your central heating and be a little bit more frugal this year.
Warm Tights & Leggings
Warm tights are a must in the winter. Not only can they be worn with a sparkly dress for a night out, but they can also be worn under more casual clothes or a jumper dress during the day. Stick on a pair of those black boots I mentioned, and you’ve got a few great looks there.
For extra warmth, opt for a pair of black leggings which can be glammed up for a night out or worn with chunky knits during the day.
Jumper Dress
The jumper dress is a great addition to every winter wardrobe. You can wear a jumper dress with leggings and boots during the day, or glam it up with a pair of tights, a belt, and maybe heels for a night out.
Slip Dress
A slip dress is one of the most versatile pieces of clothing you can own, and it’s perfect for the festive period. You can opt for a knee length or ankle length dress depending on your preference. Wear with a long sleeved bodysuit underneath, maybe a chunky knitted jumper and chunky boots for a more casual daytime look, switch out for the evening and add a sparkly cropped cardigan and heels for night time.

You really do only need a few staple items for a capsule wardrobe that will see you through the festive period this year.
