The temptation to overspend at Christmas is huge, but money is tight this year for so many families. The cost of living crisis has seen the cost of everything shoot up. From food to utility bills, pretty much every household expense has increased rapidly, but our incomes haven’t followed suit. If you’re worried about how you’re going to be able to afford to make Christmas special this year, then I’ve got a few tips to help.

Make your own Christmas cards

I love receiving handmade Christmas cards. I much prefer them to the shop-bought alternatives! They don’t need to be fancy, but just the thought that someone has gone to the effort of making a card just for me makes me feel really special.

You can make your cards as simply or as intricately as you like. You can find a selection of fonts for crafts projects online which you can download and use to give your cards a professional-looking finish.

Make your own twine decorations

Making your own Christmas decorations using twine is really simple to do and it looks incredibly effective.

You could use all kinds of everyday objects to create beautiful twine decorations which look stunning as part of a Christmas table centrepiece or on the mantel piece above the fireplace. One lovely idea I’ve seen is to use old lightbulbs and wrap them in twine to create Christmas pears. You can use a glue gun to make sure the twine sticks down securely.

Homemade Snowflake Decorations

I’m sure we’ve all made snowflakes at some point in our lives. They are so simple, yet so effective. You can create all kinds of different patterns simply by folding and cutting white paper. These look lovely stuck on windows or patio doors.

You could also try making large snowflakes using paper bags. Just gather some paper bags together and stick them all together at one end to create a fan shape, then pull them round to create a 360-degree snowflake.

You can’t beat snuggling up to watch a Christmas movie whilst being surrounded by your own, homemade Christmas decorations.

Hopefully, these few simple ideas will help you to create some Christmas magic even if you’re on a tight budget. But remember, the most important thing about Christmas is spending quality time with our loved ones. I don’t remember any of the gifts I received as a child, but I do remember the hours spent sitting at the table playing games and the delicious home-cooked food my Mum made.
