The Ultimate Game Day Potluck Spread: Sliders, Dips, Finger Foods & More

When game day rolls around, I’m all about putting together a spread that feels fun, easy, and completely irresistible. A table packed with sliders, cheesy dips, and bite size snacks just sets the mood, especially when everyone keeps circling back for “just one more.” I love recipes I can prep ahead, pop into the oven or slow cooker, and then let everyone help themselves while the game plays on. A good slow cooker for keeping dips warm and a stack of sturdy sheet pans for sliders make hosting so much easier.

I’ve learned that the best game day potluck is all about balance. You’ve got your classics that everyone expects, but it’s fun to mix in a few surprises that get people talking. A twist on a slider, a different dip flavor, or a sweet snack tucked in between the savory ones keeps the table interesting. I also swear by using disposable serving trays, mini tongs, and toothpick flags so everything feels festive without creating a pile of dishes at the end of the night.

To make things simple, I pulled all my favorite game day recipes together in one place. This list covers everything from melty, crowd pleasing dips to easy finger foods and a few lighter sides to round things out. If you’re hosting at home or bringing a dish to share, this spread has you covered. Add a large serving board, a few small bowls for sauces, and you’re ready to impress before kickoff even happens.

Why You’ll Love These Recipes

  • They’re made for sharing, which means easy portions, minimal mess, and happy guests.

  • Many options are easy to keep warm or serve at room temperature.
  • They work just as well for potlucks as they do for hosting at home.
  • You can mix and match to build a spread that fits your crowd and your schedule.

Servings: 6

  • 3/4 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk (or you can use regular milk with a tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice added)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions:

  1. Dry the hot dogs with paper towels. Skewer each hot dog with a wooden stick, making sure the stick is centered and inserted about halfway up the hot dog.

  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, and sugar. In a separate bowl, beat the egg and mix in the buttermilk. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. The batter should be thick enough to coat the hot dogs—add a little more buttermilk if needed.

  3. Pour vegetable oil into a deep fryer or large pot, making sure there’s enough to fully submerge the corn dogs. Heat the oil to 350°F (175°C), using a thermometer to check the temperature for accuracy.

  4. Pour the batter into a tall glass for easy dipping. Dip each skewered hot dog into the batter, coating it completely. Let the excess batter drip off briefly, then carefully lower the corn dog into the hot oil.

  5. Fry the corn dogs in batches, if needed, for about 2–3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Avoid overcrowding the pot to ensure even cooking.

  6. Remove the cooked corn dogs from the oil using a slotted spoon and drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil.

  7. Serve the corn dogs hot with your favorite condiments like ketchup, mustard, or mayonnaise.

I love making this because it’s such a fun twist on classic potato salad, and it always gets people asking what’s in it. The crispy edges from the smashed potatoes add so much texture, and the tangy, herby dressing ties everything together perfectly. It feels fresher and a little more exciting than the usual version, and it holds up so well on a potluck table. It’s one of those sides that works with absolutely everything else I’m serving on game day.
