We all know that TV subscription is often a luxury we should cut back on. But for many of us, our Sky subscription actually plays a really important role in our lives. We work hard, and all we want to do in the evenings is curl up in front of the TV. Whether it’s box sets, sport, films, or just the good old British soaps that do it for us, sometimes we just don’t want to give up our Sky TV. And why should we? But, if you’re on a money-saving mission (or even if you aren’t), then there are a few tips for haggling with Sky TV that could save you hundreds of pounds.
If you’re anything like me, then the thought of picking up the phone and actually speaking to somebody will send you into a spiral of panic. I don’t know why I have this irrational fear, but I do, and it seems I’m not alone. A huge percentage of us don’t try to haggle with our providers simply because we can’t face speaking to them! Crazy isn’t it!
But, in today’s wonderful world on the internet, it’s actually incredibly easy for us to barter with providers without having to actually speak to them. Many providers (Sky included), have fantastic live chat facilities on their website. In fact, using live chat is often the fastest way to get help when we have an issue.
So, when you’ve psyched yourself up for haggling with Sky, and you’re ready to attempt to get a better deal, you can do so without that sense of panic.
Haggling with Sky
First of all, you need to consider actually downgrading your Sky account. Dropping additional services is the quickest and easiest way to save money on your TV subscription.
Also, think about how much money you realistically want to pay. Come up with a figure based on what you can afford out of your monthly budget. Make sure you don’t spend more than you can actually afford. Sky TV is a luxury, NOT a necessity and shouldn’t be prioritised over paying your rent, council tax and other essential bills.
When you’re ready, head over to Sky and log in to your account.
Click on Help>Account and billing>Account and subscription and then Cancelling Sky TV.
Then, click “yes”.
You will then be taken to a messaging service, where you will be able to tell Sky that you wish to cancel your account (obviously you don’t but they don’t need to know that).
The first response to your message will be from a customer service advisor asking you the reasons why you wish to cancel. Make sure you tell them that you need to cut back on your outgoings and save some money. They will usually then give you a special offer, with savings up to 50% off your current bill. Sometimes, the offers are only short term. Make sure you know exactly what you’re agreeing to before going ahead.
It’s really that simple. No need to pick up the phone and wait around on hold, it’s all done via quick and easy messages online.
