Have enough savings

If you’re truly serious about moving abroad then you’ll have to have a good amount of savings. This amount of savings should last for several months abroad and needs to include things like housing costs, insurance, emergency costs, moving expenses, transportation, security deposits, registration fees, and anything else that would affect your lifestyle such as bills and food. This is only covering the amount in the new country, so funds should also be put back for application fees, immigration solicitors, moving services, airline costs, visas, and permits.

Research cost of living for your new host country

It’s best to research in advance what the cost is for your new host country. This can include rental or other housing costs, weekly price of food, average amount utilities cost per month, transportation cost, and many others. It’s very important to have a general idea of how much you’ll be spending on average so you can better judge if moving is a good idea or not. You can check ex-pat blogs and cost of living calculators as a part of your research to know what the cost of living will be.

Set up a budget

Creating a budget helps with starting on savings, but it can also help you figure out where you can stop spending and start saving so you can have the funds to move abroad. This can also help you figure out what to sell to make more income such as selling your home

Choose your bank before arrival

Once you move to your new country, you’ll need to immediately get things going by having a bank account. Many countries are cashless societies, so a debit card is a must. It’s best to research banks in advance to determine which one is best for you. For some banks, it can be relatively easy to open an account, while others are far more strict. Be sure to have all your needed records to have the process begin immediately.

Look into exchange rates

It’s best to have a general understanding of the exchange rates before moving to your new host country. This needs to be kept in mind because you will have to budget accordingly, especially if your home country’s currency is weak.

Keep in touch with financial institutions

It’s important to inform your bank and other financial institutions that you have accounts that you’ll be overseas. Your account can freeze if you don’t state otherwise. Oftentimes, your bank will request your new address from abroad to keep on file.

Have all the right documents

To stay organized and not have any difficulties entering the country, renting a home, or opening a bank account, you’ll need to have all the needed documents. This can include your passport, visa, copy of your work permit, previously filed tax records, and proof of finances (such as a bank statement).

Keep on top of taxes

Filing taxes in a foreign country will have its challenges. It’s vital to have an understanding of all of your tax requirements for both your home country and your host country. Not educating yourself on the matter can result in taxes being filed incorrectly, which means fines and penalties.
