How much money could you save with a refurbished phone?
As phones (ever seemingly) become more expensive with every passing year, many of us are looking for cheaper alternatives that don’t empty our wallets overnight. The latest phones have so many features that are very rarely used in some cases (think about three lenses on a camera and the modern wireless earphones just to name a couple of examples.) How many of these features do you actually use on a regular basis?
To add to the expense of the actual phone itself, the contracts that they are tied to are also on the up in terms of financial value. In this blog, we will be looking at the benefits of choosing a refurbished phone over a brand new one. This doesn’t mean to say that refurbished phones are all ten years old and don’t have any apps on them; quite the opposite. Refurbished phones are usually two-three years older than the newest model that has just been released, and have all been through an official refurbishment process.
According to a study by refurbished phone provider WeSellTek, you could save an average of £126 every year by choosing a refurbished iPhone over a new one. If you consider a whole family with iPhones, you could save your household over £500 every year by choosing refurbished (depending on the size of your family, of course!)

Refurbished – Grade A (Pristine Condition)
“Will show, at worst, very light signs of wear on the housing and screen.”
Refurbished – Grade B (Excellent Condition)
“Will show light signs of wear which can include light scratches and scuffs on the housing and screen.”
Refurbished – Grade C (Good Condition)
“Will show light to medium signs of wear which can be noticeable scratches and dents on the housing and noticeable scratches on the screen.”
Refurbished – Grade D (Fair Condition)
“Will show heavy signs of wear which can be deep scratches and or chips on the housing and screen.”
As you can see, the Grade A’s will likely cost more than the lower grades. As with everything, there are a few other key tips to look out for when choosing a refurbished phone, the first of those being that you should always look for a warranty. If anything were to go wrong, or you found a fault after buying it, the warranty you gave will help ensure you get your money back.
It’s also important that you understand the grading system unique to the retailer you’re buying from. Grade A/Pristine condition may not include/be the same as what another retailer is offering.
Finally, always check for network locks – many people forget about this. Some refurbished iPhones are locked to a specific network. So, if you’re planning to use a network/sim card you already have, you need to check if this is possible before you buy the refurbished iPhone.
