I’m a big fan of loyalty points cards. They are a great way to save up some money when you’re shopping which you can then use towards future purchases. The Nectar card scheme has been around since 2002. Unlike many other points cards, the beauty of the Nectar card is that you can build up points at various retailers, it’s not just limited to Sainsbury’s. OK, so saving up Nectar points isn’t going to turn you into a millionaire. But, as with any of these things, every little bit really does add up, and if you’re looking for ways to be savvier with your cash, and you regularly shop at one of the retailers involved, then it’s definitely worth getting hold of a Nectar card.
How do Nectar points work?
As with any loyalty points scheme, you build up points every time you scan your Nectar card.
You earn one point for every qualifying £1 you spend in Sainsbury’s. Each point is then worth 0.05p. Although that sounds like a tiny amount, you would be surprised how quickly those amounts add up, particularly if you do your weekly shopping in Sainsbury’s. Let’s look at that a little closer. The average family spends just over £63 on food each week (I wish our food shopping cost that little). That £63 per week adds up to £3,276 on food shopping per year. That’s a total of £16.38 in Nectar points over the course of the year. I like to use points like this towards our Christmas food shop which is always far more expensive than any other shop throughout the year.
It’s worth pointing out here that you won’t get Nectar points for everything you buy in Sainsbury’s. There are a few exemptions such as baby formula, postage stamps and alcohol.

When you’ve saved up your Nectar points, it’s good to know that there are a really wide range of places where you can use them, you’re not just limited to using them at Sainsbury’s. Nectar points special offers
From time to time, you may be able to get more for your points. If you download the Nectar app, you’ll be able to see any special offers as soon as they become available. In the past, Sainsbury’s have offered a double-up promotion and Nectar points could be doubled in value towards certain product ranges such as electricals, clothing and entertainment. However, Sainsbury’s pulled the plug on this scheme in 2021 and it’s currently unclear whether it will make a comeback.
As with any supermarket loyalty scheme, it’s always worth getting hold of a card and collecting points on things you’d planned to buy anyway.
