From one migraine sufferer to another.

I’ve suffered from migraines for most of my adult life. Unfortunately they run in the family, so I guess there was little chance of escaping them.

I first started with migraines when I left home for university. They were fairly infrequent to begin with. I didn’t sleep well at university and the doctors put it down to tiredness and stress. I tried migraleve amongst other medications as soon as I felt the first stirrings of a migraine. They did work for a while.

Over the past few years my migraines intensified during pregnancy. Those were tough ones as I couldn’t and didn’t want to take the strongest painkillers. So I’d take to my bed for the duration.

Now, my migraines have taken a different slant. I can feel them coming but nothing I try shifts them. They just gradually intensify.

I always used to suffer with “just” the pounding headache which was enough to send me to my bed. Now, however, the headache centres around one eye, it can be either eye. The headache builds to a pounding pain over a few hours and then sickness kicks in. It’s absolute hell. The last one started last Thursday evening and lasted until Sunday morning.

My main problem is guilt. During these migraines I feel so guilty about the children. I try my best to put on a brave face and get on with things but anyone who says they have a migraine whilst chatting and walking around is telling a big fat porky pie. They are completely debilitating and the children are inevitably neglected during this time.

I’m going to book another appointment with the doctor and see what they suggest. In the meantime though, I’m going to order Tiger Balm. I’ve read so many reviews about this product by migraine sufferers that I have to give it a go. I admit to being a little sceptical but at this moment in time I’ll try anything!

  1. So sorry to hear you struggle with migraines too, they are so debilitating. I’ve not tried Tiger Balm, but it would be interesting to see what you think of it when you give it a go! I understand your guilt (even though I’m obviously going to say you shouldn’t feel guilty as it’s not your fault); have you tried seeing your GP to give a prescription migraine medication a try (such as Sumatriptan, which is quite good and I use it)?
