Simple switches to reduce plastic & cut back on chemicals in your home
So many of the household products we use contain plastic, and we all know by now the importance of cutting back on the amount of plastic that goes into landfill. But making a full switch to a plastic-free life can be quite a daunting task. However, there are some simple switches you can use that will help to cut down on the amount of plastic your household throws away without it really impacting too much on your day-to-day way of life. Many of the products we use are also heavily reliant on harmful chemicals too, and we definitely want to cut back on those!
Whenever people start to think about using less plastic, it can seem really overwhelming. We are so used to using plastic products in pretty much every aspect of our lives, that cutting plastic out altogether might seem impossible. The truth is that even if you just work on switching a few products you will be making a difference. These days, it’s really not difficult to get hold of easy to use alternatives to plastic products that work just as well around the home as their plastic predecessors. And switching to products with less harmful chemicals can be equally daunting. It’s a real minefield if you don’t know what you’re looking for. SaveMoneyCutCarbon offer a huge range of products that fit this purpose perfectly. I’ve been trying out a few of their products this month to see just how well they stack up.
Biodegradable Bin Liners
Bin liners are a pretty necessary purchase in our house. With three children at home, our bins can get full really quickly. Bin bags are traditionally made out of plastic, and I didn’t think there was any alternative, particularly an alternative that was strong enough to hold a full bin of rubbish. However, SaveMoneyCutCarbon offer biodegradable bin liners and they are just as strong if not stronger than the bin bags I usually buy from the supermarket. They hold up pretty well on price too, a roll of 20 sixty litre bags will set you back less than £6 which is a really great price for a product that both does the job and is better for the environment too.
Anti-Limescale Products
Where we live, limescale is a big problem. Our washing machine needs really regular cleaning so that it doesn’t clog up, and I feel like I’m constantly cleaning our bathroom to avoid a build up of limescale.
Many anti-limescale products contain high levels of harmful chemicals in order to combat the limescale, and I never knew there were any alternatives, more environmentally friendly options. However, SaveMoneyCutCarbon sent me an anti-limescale ball to try out and although I’ve only been using it for a short time, I’m definitely noticing a difference.
Drain Cleaning
I’m pretty sure we’ve all experienced clogged drains. It seems like a fairly regular occurrence in our house. I’ve always just opted for those drain cleaning products that you pour down the plug hole and leave to work their magic overnight, but these chemical cleaners are really bad for the environment, and they can actually be bad for your pipework too. If you want to switch to a more environmentally friendly alternative that will help to keep your drains smelling fresh and clear from blockages, then enzymatic drain cleaning sticks are a really great alternative. You just drop a stick into your plug hole once a month and they will help to keep your drains draining freely.

It’s so easy to just pick up the same old products without thinking about it, but we all need to be making a concerted effort to cut back on the amount of plastic and harmful chemicals we use in our homes, particularly in cleaning products. Just a few simple switches are all it takes to start making a difference.
