Sustainable Energy
Sustainable energy is a hot topic at the moment. We are all becoming increasingly aware of the damage that our lifestyles are doing to our planet, and using a sustainable energy source is probably one of the easiest things we can do to help combat that. But not everyone understands what sustainable energy actually is and how they can get involved. So, I wanted to share a few bits of information about what sustainable energy is and how individuals and businesses can get on board.
What is Sustainable Energy?
It’s pretty self explanatory really, sustainable energy is energy that can be sustained long term. Many of our current energy sources such as oil and gas won’t be around forever, so we need to make steps to combat that.
There’s also a huge impact on the environment with many energy sources we currently use. Burning fuels has a huge impact on pollution which is slowly destroying our planet. If people don’t switch to more eco friendly energy sources, then the effects of pollution will only get worse. Pollution leads to a lack of clean air which in turn can lead to animals and plant life struggling to survive.
Types of sustainable energy
There are a few types of sustainable energy that you may have heard of. Some are already commonly used as sources of energy.
Solar power
Solar power is a really popular energy choice and we’re seeing more and more people adding solar panels to their homes and their businesses. The beauty of this is that once the panels are installed, they’re really low maintenance. They simply catch the sunlight and convert it into energy which is then used to power homes and businesses.
One of the most obvious downsides with solar power is that it may not always be effective during winter months or in places where there are low levels of sunlight.
Wind power
We’ve all seen wind turbines turning on the tops of hills. They use large blades to catch the wind which then makes the blades turn. As the blades spin round, they drive a turbine which generates electricity. They are a fantastic way to generate power on a large scale – but they’re not something that many of us could fit into our back yards!
Sustainable energy in business
Businesses always have to think about the costs of everything they do, and switching to sustainable energy may seem like an expensive option. But, in reality, the initial costs can quickly be repaid by the reduced cost of using a sustainable energy source. So, it’s definitely something to be looked into.
Even simple switches such as using energy saving lightbulbs will make a difference, so it’s worth looking into what’s available in your area.
