Sweet and Savory Chex Mix with Candied Nuts
If you’re looking for a snack that’s a little bit different from the usual, this Chex Mix is definitely worth trying. It’s got everything you could want in one bowl – crunchy cereal, salty pretzels, cheesy Parmesan, buttery seasoning and the most amazing sweet and sticky candied nuts scattered throughout.
I love making this for holiday parties, game days or just to have sitting on the counter over the weekend. The homemade candied nuts make it feel a little bit more special than your classic Chex Mix, and honestly they’re worth making for this recipe alone. They add the perfect little hit of sweetness alongside all the savoury flavours.
It’s also a great make-ahead snack, which is always a bonus when you’re entertaining. Once it’s cooled completely, it’ll keep really well in an airtight container, so you can make it a day or two in advance and have one less thing to think about.
Why We Love This Recipe
- It has the best mix of sweet and savoury. The candied nuts add a little sweetness, while the Worcestershire sauce, seasonings and Parmesan keep everything really savoury and moreish.
- There’s so much crunch. Between the Chex cereal, pretzels, Goldfish and clusters of nuts, every handful has a slightly different texture.
- It makes a huge batch. This recipe serves around 20, so it’s perfect for parties, holiday gatherings, game days or just keeping a big container in the cupboard for snacking.
- It feels a bit more special than regular Chex Mix. The pistachios, pecans, almonds and freshly grated Parmesan make it taste almost like a fancy version of the classic.
- You can make it ahead. It keeps really well once it has cooled, which means you don’t need to be making it at the last minute when you’ve got people coming over.
- It’s really easy to customise. You can swap the nuts, change the crackers or add a little extra chilli powder if you like your snack mix with more of a kick.
- It’s dangerously easy to eat. Honestly, once you start picking at this, it’s very hard to stop!

Equipment
- Large baking tray (or two if needed)
- Parchment paper or a silicone baking mat
- Large mixing bowl
- Small saucepan
- Wooden spoon or silicone spatula
- Measuring cups and spoons
Ingredients
Candied Nuts
-
Water – Helps dissolve the sugar and creates the syrup for coating the nuts.
-
Light brown sugar – Adds sweetness and gives the nuts that lovely sticky caramel coating.
-
Salt – Balances the sweetness and brings out all the other flavours. If you’re using salted nuts, you can cut this back a little.
-
Ground black pepper – Adds a gentle warmth that works really well with the sweet and savoury flavours.
-
Chili powder – Just enough to add a subtle kick without making the mix spicy.
-
Unsalted pistachios – Add plenty of crunch and a lovely buttery flavour.
-
Pecans – These become wonderfully caramelised and add a rich, slightly sweet flavour.
-
Lightly salted almonds – Another layer of crunch that holds up really well in the mix.

Chex Mix
-
Corn Chex cereal – The classic base that gets wonderfully crisp in the oven.
-
Rice Chex cereal – Adds a slightly different texture and helps soak up all that buttery seasoning.
-
Pretzels – Because every good snack mix needs those salty, crunchy bites.
-
Goldfish crackers – These add a fun cheesy flavour that everyone seems to love.
-
Salted butter, melted – Coats everything and helps the seasonings stick.
-
Worcestershire sauce – Adds loads of savoury, umami flavour and is what gives homemade Chex Mix its signature taste.
-
Garlic powder – Brings plenty of savoury flavour without overpowering the mix.
-
Onion powder – Works alongside the garlic to create that classic seasoned snack mix flavour.
-
Ground mustard – Adds a subtle tang that really lifts all the other flavours.
-
Freshly grated Parmigiano cheese – Tossed through while the mix is still warm for a delicious cheesy finish. Freshly grated melts and coats everything much better than the pre-grated kind.

Recipe Instructions
Full measurements and cooking times can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 325°F (160°C) and line a large baking tray with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper.
Step 2: In a small saucepan, combine the water, brown sugar, salt, black pepper, and chili powder. Cook over low heat for 5–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has completely dissolved.

Step 3: Stir in the pistachios, pecans, and almonds, making sure they’re evenly coated in the syrup.

Step 4: Spread the nut mixture out onto the prepared baking tray and bake for 10 minutes. Give the nuts a good stir, then return them to the oven for another 10–12 minutes until they’re sticky and lightly caramelised.

Step 5: Remove the tray from the oven and leave the nuts to cool completely. As they cool, they’ll harden into clusters. Break them into bite-sized pieces.

Step 6: Reduce the oven temperature to 250°F (120°C).
Step 7: In a very large mixing bowl, combine the Corn Chex, Rice Chex, pretzels, and Goldfish crackers.

Step 8: Drizzle over the melted butter and Worcestershire sauce, then toss gently until everything is evenly coated.
Step 9: Sprinkle over half of the garlic powder, onion powder, and ground mustard, toss to coat, then add the remaining seasonings and toss again. This helps distribute the spices more evenly throughout the mix.
Step 10: Spread the cereal mixture onto a large baking tray, then scatter over the candied nut clusters and gently mix everything together.

Step 11: Bake for 65–70 minutes, stirring and rotating the tray every 15 minutes so the mix toasts evenly.
Step 12: Remove from the oven and let the Chex Mix cool for about 5 minutes.
Step 13: Sprinkle over the grated Parmigiano cheese and gently toss until evenly coated.

Step 14: Leave the Chex Mix to cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container or sealed bag for storage.

What to Serve with Chex Mix with Candied Nuts
This Chex Mix is brilliant on its own, but it’s also a great addition to any party spread. I love putting out a big bowl for holiday gatherings, game days or family movie nights, and it’s one of those snacks people keep coming back to for another handful.
-
Add it to a snack board with cheeses, cured meats, crackers and fresh fruit.
-
Serve alongside dips like spinach dip, buffalo chicken dip or a warm cheese dip.
-
Pair it with other party snacks like pigs in blankets, sausage rolls or mini sliders.
-
Pop it into bowls for Christmas parties, game days or cosy movie nights at home.
-
Package it up in little cellophane bags or jars to give as homemade gifts.
-
Enjoy it with an ice-cold beer, cider or your favourite soft drink while relaxing with friends and family.
Storing
One of the things I love about this Chex Mix is that it keeps really well, so it’s perfect for making ahead if you’ve got a party or holiday gathering coming up. Just make sure it’s completely cool before you pack it away, otherwise the trapped steam can make it lose that lovely crunch.
Store it in an airtight container or a large zip-top bag at room temperature. It’ll stay fresh for up to a week, although in my house it never seems to last that long!
If you find it’s lost a little of its crispness after a few days, you can spread it out on a baking tray and pop it into a low oven for 5–10 minutes to crisp it back up again. Just let it cool before serving or storing it again.
I wouldn’t recommend freezing this one. The cereal and crackers can lose their texture once they’ve thawed, so it’s definitely best enjoyed fresh.

Variations & Substitutions
One of my favourite things about homemade Chex Mix is how easy it is to tweak. You can swap ingredients based on what you’ve already got in the cupboard or add a few extras to make it your own. It’s a really forgiving recipe, so don’t be afraid to experiment.
-
Swap the pistachios, pecans or almonds for cashews, peanuts, walnuts or your favourite nuts.
-
Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or extra chilli powder if you like a bit more heat.
-
Stir in some bagel chips, oyster crackers or rye chips for even more crunch.
-
Use your favourite crackers instead of Goldfish if you can’t find them.
-
Try smoked paprika instead of some of the garlic or mustard for a slightly smoky flavour.
-
Swap the Parmigiano for freshly grated Parmesan if that’s what you have on hand.
-
Add a sprinkle of dried herbs like rosemary or thyme for a festive twist.
-
Toss in a handful of pretzel sticks or mini breadsticks for even more variety.

FAQs

How long does homemade Chex Mix last?
Homemade Chex Mix will stay fresh for around 7 days when stored in an airtight container at room temperature. Keeping moisture out is the key to maintaining that lovely crunchy texture.
Can I use different nuts?
Absolutely. Pecans, pistachios and almonds work really well together, but you can easily swap in walnuts, cashews or peanuts depending on what you have on hand.
Why is my Chex Mix not crispy?
