Workplace safety 101: System upgrades & where to start

Improving workplace safety is often one of the most overlooked areas of business development. The benefits are often profound, from reducing incident-related costs to improving employee satisfaction and attracting better talent, and the price of implementing these system upgrades is often relatively low. 

It’s important to both prioritise safety upgrades and to take a critically informed, strategic approach to these systematic overhauls. From initial assessments to engaging external security consultants, here are a  few pointers on how you can improve safety in your workplace. 

Carry out risk assessments

The first step when approaching something as critical as workplace safety is to carry out risk assessments. 

It doesn’t matter if you’ve done these assessments in the past – you need to make sure that you’re fully aware of existing, not just historical vulnerabilities, and that you’re then able to take action to mitigate those risks. 

You may identify some areas that you’ve entirely overlooked in the past, and also find that certain solutions are already entirely adequate. Without these data-informed insights, any system upgrades you attempt will just be shots in the dark. 

Engage key stakeholders

Risk assessments are a great starting point, but it’s important that you don’t end up taking an abstract perspective on workplace danger that doesn’t reflect the daily experiences of people in your actual workforce. 

Make sure that you engage key stakeholders in these processes, that is to say, actually speak with and consult your frontline workers. 

Ask them for input on safety protocols, and you’ll likely gain invaluable insights on the efficacy of your systems, how they impact employee productivity, and how likely it is that other workers will actually end up following those protocols. 

Start with the low-hanging fruit

There will often be certain areas where a relatively small investment can have a big impact on workplace safety.

Focusing on these areas will likely result in the best bang for your buck. Only once you’ve covered all of the ‘basics’ should you then think about making finer, more marginal adjustments.
