27 Christmas Eve Dinner Ideas for a Cozy Family Meal

I love Christmas Eve, but I definitely don’t want to spend most of it in the kitchen. By that point there’s usually still wrapping to finish, things I’ve forgotten to do and everyone asking what time we’re eating. And with a big Christmas dinner coming the next day, I really don’t want to make another huge meal the night before.

That said, I do like Christmas Eve dinner to feel a little bit special. It’s Christmas after all! For me, that usually means something really cosy and comforting that we can all enjoy together, but that doesn’t involve loads of work. I’m more than happy with a big pasta dish, something bubbling away in the slow cooker or even sliders that everyone can just grab.

I’ve put together some of my favourite Christmas Eve dinner ideas here, and there’s a real mixture. Some feel a bit more festive, while others are just really good, easy family dinners that are perfect for a cosy night at home. Hopefully there’s something here that your family will love too.

Why You’ll Love These Recipes

  • I’ve tried to include a bit of everything. Some years you want a proper Christmas Eve dinner and other years you just want something cosy and easy that everyone will eat. There are plenty of options for both here.
  • I don’t want to spend all of Christmas Eve in the kitchen. I’m guessing you probably don’t either! That’s why there are lots of easy slow cooker, one-pan and simple dinner ideas in this list.
  • They feel Christmassy without being too much. I love all the big Christmas food, but I don’t necessarily want Christmas dinner two days in a row. These recipes still feel a little bit special without stealing Christmas Day’s thunder.
  • Most of these are the sort of meals my family would actually eat. I’ve included plenty of cosy pasta dishes, casseroles, slow cooker dinners and other family favourites rather than anything too fancy.
  • Christmas Eve can be as relaxed as you want it to be. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with putting a big dish of pasta or a tray of sliders on the table and calling it dinner. In fact, that’s often my favourite kind of Christmas Eve.
