How Young People are Turning Their Hobbies into a Business
It’s not long ago that making money on the side was frowned upon as it meant that you probably weren’t 100% focused and committed to your main job. Thankfully, those days are long gone, and many young people now make money from their side hustles. In fact, some of these side hustles end up becoming so successful that they become a full-time business. That’s what happened to me. I was working 35 hours per week in my employed job as well as blogging and matched betting as a way to bring in more money. In April 2022, I ditched the job to blog full-time as I’d reached a level where my blogging income had taken over from my paid employment. I’m certainly not alone in having what started out as a hobby turn into a full-time business.
What kinds of hobbies can become a business?
There are lots of hobbies that could become a full-time business. Any hobby that brings in money, could potentially go on to become a successful business. In my opinion, the key to success is often by doing something you love. If you’re going to be motivated to spend your precious spare time doing something, it needs to be something you’re motivated to do rather than something that feels like a chore.
Blogging
Blogging is something that many young people start doing as a hobby or as a way to document their lives. When I first started blogging about making money online, it was just a way for me to keep track of what I was doing and share the things that worked and the things that didn’t. I never thought that my ramblings would eventually turn into a full-time job, but I’m so grateful they did.
Blogging definitely isn’t a quick way to make money, it takes a long time to build a website that brands want to work with, but if writing is something you enjoy, then it’s a great hobby to get into and has the potential to earn an unlimited income.
YouTube
If you a group of tweens or teens what they’d like to do when they grow up, you can bet that a large proportion of them will say they want to be a YouTuber. Many successful YouTubers start their channels off as a hobby and gradually build their follower numbers to a level where they can make an income from the platform.
Successful YouTubers such as PewDiePie make their money through advertising and paid brand work. According to alldayPA, the YouTuber behind the channel, Felix Kjellberg, first created his channel back in 2010, and he has created that into a successful business through paid YouTube work and by releasing his own video games and self-help books.
Writing
Writing can be incredibly therapeutic and if you’re good at it, then you could turn your hobby into a freelance business. If you check out sites such as Fiverr, there are always adverts from people needing writers. The only issue with it is that to begin with your earning potential can be pretty low. But, if you go into this as a hobby that you enjoy, and start to build up a portfolio of your work, then you could turn this into a successful business.
Reselling
Reselling can be incredibly lucrative but it does take a bit of time, effort and knowledge to turn it into a successful business. For this reason, many young people start reselling as a hobby to begin with, before turning it into a successful business. Resellers buy their stock from various places including auctions, charity shops and local selling groups before marking the items up and reselling for a profit. This can be quite an enjoyable hobby as you get to know which items sell well and what to look out for. You might even be able to turn it into something bigger than you ever thought; something that eventually needs international forwarding to keep all your customers happy.
