Mocha Almond Fudge

If you love chocolate and coffee together, then you’re going to love this Mocha Almond Fudge. It’s rich, creamy and chocolatey, with just enough coffee flavor to make it a little bit different from your usual chocolate fudge. The toasted almonds add a lovely bit of crunch too, which I think works really well with all that smooth chocolate.

I love making homemade fudge because it’s one of those treats that looks like you’ve put loads of effort in, but it’s actually really easy. This one only needs a handful of ingredients, and there’s no need for a candy thermometer or anything complicated. You just melt everything together, stir in the almonds and pop it in the fridge to set. The only problem is having to wait a couple of hours before you can tuck in!

This is a lovely recipe to make around Christmas, especially if you’re putting together homemade treat boxes for family and friends. I think little squares of fudge always go down well, and it’s nice to have something a bit different from all the usual Christmas cookies and brownies. Of course, you don’t need a special occasion to make it. It’s just as good with a cup of coffee when you fancy something sweet!

Why We Love This Recipe

  • So easy to make! You only need a handful of ingredients and about 10 minutes of prep time. The hardest part is waiting for it to set in the fridge!
  • That chocolate and coffee combo. I love how the espresso brings out the rich chocolate flavor without making the fudge taste too strongly of coffee.
  • A little bit of crunch. The toasted almonds are lovely in this. They break up all that smooth, creamy chocolate and give the fudge a nice bit of texture.
  • Great for gifting. Cut it into little squares, pop them into a pretty box or bag and you’ve got a lovely homemade gift for Christmas.
  • Perfect for making ahead. You can make a batch a few days before you need it and keep it in the fridge. One less thing to worry about when you’re busy!

Equipment

  • 8×8-inch baking pan

  • Parchment paper

  • Medium saucepan

  • Wooden spoon or silicone spatula

  • Measuring cups and spoons

  • Sharp knife

  • Cutting board

Ingredients

  • 3 cups semisweet chocolate chips – These give the fudge its lovely rich chocolate flavor. I like using semisweet chocolate because it’s sweet without being too sickly.

  • 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk – This is what makes the fudge so smooth and creamy, and means you don’t need to mess around with a candy thermometer.

  • 2 tablespoons butter – Just a little butter helps make the fudge extra rich and gives it a lovely smooth texture.

  • 1–2 teaspoons espresso powder – Start with one teaspoon if you prefer a milder coffee flavor, or add two if you really love coffee.

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract – A little vanilla works really well with the chocolate and coffee and brings all those lovely flavors together.

  • Pinch of salt – Don’t skip this! It might only be a tiny amount, but it helps balance out the sweetness of the fudge.

  • 1 cup toasted sliced or chopped almonds, plus extra for sprinkling on top – These add a lovely bit of crunch to the creamy fudge. Toasting them first really brings out their nutty flavor, and I like to save a few for sprinkling over the top too.

Recipe Instructions

Full measurements and cooking times can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Step 1: Line an 8×8-inch pan with parchment paper, leaving enough overhang on the sides to lift the fudge out later.

Step 2: Add the semisweet chocolate chips, sweetened condensed milk, butter, and espresso powder to a medium saucepan. Heat over low heat, stirring often, until everything is melted and smooth.

Step 3: Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract, salt, and 1 cup of the almonds until evenly combined.

Step 4: Spread the mixture evenly into the prepared pan, then sprinkle a little extra almonds over the top.

Step 5: Refrigerate for about 2 hours, or until the fudge is completely set.

Step 6: Lift the fudge out using the parchment overhang and cut into squares.

What to Serve with Mocha Almond Fudge

This fudge is lovely just as it is, and I think a couple of squares with a hot drink makes a really nice afternoon treat. It’s quite rich, so you don’t need much to satisfy that chocolate craving! If you’re making it for Christmas or having friends and family over, there are a few lovely ways to serve it.

  • Coffee – A hot cup of coffee goes really well with the chocolate and almond flavors. I love how the coffee brings out that mocha taste even more.

  • Hot chocolate – If you’re a real chocolate lover, try serving a square or two alongside a mug of hot chocolate. It’s definitely a chocolate overload, but sometimes that’s exactly what you fancy!

  • Vanilla ice cream – A couple of pieces of fudge with a scoop of vanilla ice cream makes a lovely little dessert.

  • Fresh berries – Strawberries or raspberries are really nice alongside this fudge. Their slightly tart flavor helps balance out all that rich chocolate.

  • Christmas cookies – If you’re putting together a festive dessert platter, add some homemade cookies, brownies and a few pieces of fudge. It’s great for letting everyone help themselves.

  • A glass of cold milk – Sometimes the simplest things are the best! A little square of chocolate fudge with a cold glass of milk is always a winner.

Storing

This Mocha Almond Fudge is really easy to store, which makes it a great recipe to prepare ahead of time. Once it’s completely set, cut it into squares and pop them into an airtight container. I like to keep mine in the fridge because it helps the fudge stay nice and firm, especially if your kitchen is quite warm. It should keep well for up to 2 weeks in the fridge. If you’re stacking the pieces on top of each other, just pop a little parchment paper between the layers to stop them sticking together.

You can also freeze this fudge if you want to make a batch well in advance. Wrap the pieces individually or separate them with parchment paper, then store them in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to enjoy some, just leave the fudge to thaw in the fridge for a few hours. I actually quite like eating it straight from the fridge, but you can leave it at room temperature for a few minutes if you prefer a slightly softer texture.

Variations & Substitutions

One of the things I love about homemade fudge is how easy it is to change things around depending on what you’ve got in the cupboard. This Mocha Almond Fudge is lovely just as it is, but there are plenty of little tweaks you can make if you fancy trying something different.

  • Try different nuts – Not a fan of almonds? Chopped walnuts, pecans or hazelnuts would all work really well. Just toast them first to bring out their flavor.

  • Make it extra chocolatey – Swap some of the semisweet chocolate chips for dark chocolate if you prefer a richer, slightly less sweet fudge.

  • Leave out the coffee – If you’re not keen on coffee, you can leave out the espresso powder altogether. You’ll still have a lovely chocolate almond fudge.

  • Add a little cinnamon – A pinch of cinnamon works really nicely with the chocolate and coffee, especially if you’re making this around Christmas.

  • Try white chocolate chips – Sprinkle a few over the top before the fudge sets for a little extra sweetness and a nice contrast against the dark chocolate.

  • Make it nut-free – Leave out the almonds and replace them with crushed cookies or chocolate chips for a bit of crunch instead. Just check the labels if you’re making it for someone with a nut allergy.

  • Add a little sea salt – A light sprinkling of flaky sea salt over the top is lovely if you enjoy that sweet and salty combination.

FAQs

Can I make Mocha Almond Fudge without a candy thermometer?

Yes! That's one of the things I love about this recipe. You don't need a candy thermometer or any special equipment. Just melt the chocolate, condensed milk, butter and espresso powder together over low heat, stirring until everything is lovely and smooth. It's so much easier than traditional fudge recipes.

Can I use instant coffee instead of espresso powder?

You can, although I'd recommend using a good-quality instant coffee that dissolves easily. Espresso powder has a stronger flavor, so you might need to adjust the amount of instant coffee to get that lovely mocha taste. Start with a teaspoon and see how you go.

Does Mocha Almond Fudge taste strongly of coffee?

Not really, especially if you stick to one teaspoon of espresso powder. The coffee brings out the rich chocolate flavor and gives the fudge a lovely hint of mocha. If you're a big coffee fan like me, you can use two teaspoons for a stronger coffee taste.

Why is my homemade fudge not setting properly?

If your fudge is still soft, it might just need a little longer in the fridge. I recommend leaving it for at least 2 hours, but you can leave it overnight if needed. Make sure you've used the correct amount of chocolate and sweetened condensed milk too, as getting those measurements right is important for helping the fudge set.

Can I make Mocha Almond Fudge ahead of time?

Absolutely! This is actually a really handy recipe to make ahead, especially around Christmas when you've already got loads to do. You can prepare it a few days in advance and keep it in an airtight container in the fridge until you're ready to serve it.

Do I need to toast the almonds before adding them to the fudge?

You don't have to, but I really recommend it. Toasting the almonds brings out their lovely nutty flavor and gives them a little extra crunch. It only takes a few minutes in a dry skillet over medium-low heat. Just keep an eye on them because they can burn quite quickly!

Can I use milk chocolate instead of semisweet chocolate chips?

You can try it, but bear in mind that milk chocolate is much sweeter and can make the fudge softer. I prefer semisweet chocolate for this recipe because it balances out the sweetness of the condensed milk and works really well with the coffee.

Can you freeze Mocha Almond Fudge?

Yes, this fudge freezes really well! I like to cut it into squares before freezing so I can just take out a few pieces at a time. Pop them into a freezer-safe container with parchment paper between the layers and freeze for up to 3 months. Let them thaw in the fridge before eating.

How long does homemade Mocha Almond Fudge last?

Stored properly in an airtight container in the fridge, this fudge should keep well for up to 2 weeks. I actually think it tastes lovely straight from the fridge because it stays nice and firm. Just make sure it's kept covered so it doesn't pick up any other flavors from the fridge.

Can I make this chocolate almond fudge without nuts?

Of course! If you don't like almonds, you can simply leave them out and make a smooth mocha chocolate fudge instead. You could also stir in some crushed cookies for a little crunch. If you're making it for someone with a nut allergy, make sure all your other ingredients are suitable too.
