Pret Subscription – Is it worth the money?

If you’re a coffee lover and you love to grab a takeaway coffee on your way to work in the morning, then you might want to consider signing up for a Pret subscription. But, before you sign yourself up to any kind of monthly subscription service, it’s important to work out whether it’s going to be value for money.

Pret a Manger is an international sandwich and coffee shop which first launched back in 1983. They now have over 430 shops in England, with 273 of those in London. Often referred to as just Pret, they first launched their subscription service back in 2020. Back then, it cost £20 per month, but in April 2022, they increased the monthly price to £25.

So, what’s included in a Pret subscription and is it worth it for you?

How does the Pret subscription work?

All you need to do is download the Pret app and register your payment details.

Once you’ve registered, you will receive a QR code which you can then use to redeem your drinks at Pret. You can then claim up to five drinks per day.

Eligible drinks with a Pret subscription

Not all drinks are included with a Pret coffee subscription, so it’s important you know which drinks you can get before you sign up. There’s no point in getting a subscription if your favourite drink isn’t included.

The subscription only covers drinks, so you can’t get any food items with your QR code.

You can get most drinks that are prepared by a barista (so drinks in bottles and cans aren’t included).

Hot drinks included in your subscription

  • Organic coffees
  • Teas
  • Hot chocolates

Cold drinks included in your subscription

  • Iced coffees
  • Cold brew frappes
  • Smoothies (except Cocoa, Almond Butter & Banana Smoothie, Raspberry, Mango & Ginger Smoothie, and Avocado, Mango and Ginger Smoothies)

You can have a single shot of syrup or ‘make me stronger’ in coffee drinks that are prepared by a barista.

How much does a Pret subscription cost?

The first month’s subscription costs £12.50, then each month will cost £25 after that.

Monthly subscription payments will be taken the day before the subscription is due to renew. So, for example, if your subscription start date is the 15th of the month, any future monthly payments will be taken on the 14th of each month.

Is the Pret subscription good value for money?

This really depends on how often you’re going to use your QR code to get a drink and which drinks you’ll be getting.

If you only visit Pret once a month, then obviously this subscription isn’t going to be for you.

However, if you get a drink from Pret most days, then you’re going to be making a saving by having a Pret coffee subscription.

The image below shows prices for coffee and hot drinks through Uber Eats in London. If you were to buy a latte every day at £25 for your month’s subscription, that’s a huge saving compared to paying out of your own pocket each time.

How many orders would mean I break even?

Again, this really depends on the type of drink you go for. If you were to choose the Espresso, which is the cheapest of the hot drinks, then you’d break even after 9 drinks.

Pret have a hand coffee subscription savings calculator which allows you too see exactly how much money you would be saving based on your chosen drink and how often you have it.

Pret subscription FAQs

If you’re still trying to weigh up whether or not a Pret coffee subscription is worth it, then take a read through some of the most frequently asked questions.

Can I share my subscription with a friend?

Pret have been a little crafty here in order to prevent people sharing their subscriptions. Although you can get five eligible drinks per day, you can only claim one drink every thirty minutes. This means that you can’t get a drink for yourself and a friend at the same time and claim both of them with your QR code.

How much notice do I need to give to cancel my subscription?

You can cancel your subscription at any time, there’s no minimum contract or anything like that. If you just want to take advantage of the cheaper first month, then just make sure you cancel before your subscription renews.

Are cold drinks included in the Pret subscription?

Lots of cold drinks are included. Iced coffees, cold brew frappes and some smoothies can be enjoyed with a Pret subscription. You can’t get Cocoa, Almond Butter & Banana Smoothie, Raspberry, Mango & Ginger Smoothie, and Avocado, Mango and Ginger Smoothies.

What about extra shots?

If you want an extra shot of syrup in your drink, then you will have to pay extra. The subscription includes one shot per drink.

Pret Subscription – Final Thoughts

As with any subscription, you’ll need to weigh up for yourself whether this is going to be value for money for you. This kind of model is primarily aimed at the coffee-guzzling commuter who looks forward to their daily latte to take the edge off the commute. If you’re a coffee addict who loves barista-made drinks and you’re close to a Pret store regularly, then I’d say it might save you some money.
