Reducing Your Utility Bills with an Eco-Friendly Home

Nowadays, with climate change issues becoming more widely recognised and discussed, there is a greater emphasis on making smarter, environmentally friendly choices. The way your house is built can have an impact on the environment, but ensuring your property is eco-friendly is also great for your pocket as it can significantly reduce your utility bills. Even using pile foundations rather than concrete is better for the environment and for your budget, because they are a more environmentally friendly and economical option. 

Another way to reduce your carbon footprint and reduce your bills is to consider installing solar panels. These are a great renewable energy source as they rely purely on sunlight to generate power. This can reduce your electricity bills by some margin.

You should also check your windows. Are they single or double glazed? The latter is better for regulating the temperature in your home, which means you’re less likely to keep adjusting the thermostat during the colder months, which should limit your heating bills. Even turning your thermostat down by 1 or 2 degrees can go a long way in keeping your bills low. Double glazing can also block out any noise pollution, which is an added bonus.

Adequate insulation also has the same effect, so consider looking into this as well. Insulation can be installed in your roof, walls and even the flooring. Around a quarter of the heat in an uninsulated home is loft through the roof, which will mean you have to keep your heating on for longer.

Smart home technology is also fantastic for making your home more energy-efficient because you have greater control over your heating and lighting. For instance, if you forget to switch something off before you leave the house for work, you will be able to do so using your smartphone from a remote location, rather than leaving it on all day. 

It’s worth checking your boiler’s efficiency rating regularly to make sure it doesn’t need to be replaced and it’s very important to switch off appliances that aren’t in use.

If you do find your boiler efficiency is lower than it should be, or needs replacing and you’re constantly descaling appliances and removing limescale, it’s likely that hard water is causing the damage. Hard water contains minerals that when heated and cooled these minerals are left behind forming what’s known as limescale. Limescale can damage appliances and heating systems, compromising their ability to heat water efficiently. This is why it’s beneficial to remove the minerals from the water before it reaches your appliances and systems by using a water softener. Being limescale-free will make your home more eco-friendly and save you money on energy bills, repairs, replacements and descaling products.
