30 After School Snacks Perfect for Hungry Kids
I don’t know what it is about getting home from school, but my kids always seem to be starving. It doesn’t matter what they’ve had for lunch, they’ve barely got through the door before they’re asking what there is to eat.
So I’ve put together 30 after school snacks that are actually the kind of things my kids would want to eat. There’s a bit of everything in here – muffins, cookies and snack mixes, but also mini pizzas, pinwheels and some more filling ideas for the days when a little snack just isn’t going to cut it.
Quite a few of them can be made ahead too, which is always handy. I’d much rather have a batch of muffins or something already sitting there than start making something from scratch at 4pm when everyone is hungry and I’m trying to get on with dinner!
Why You’ll Love These Recipes
- There’s loads of variety. I’ve included a good mix of sweet and savory snacks, so there should be something for whatever they fancy that day.
- Most are really easy to make. Because the last thing I want to do after a busy day is spend ages making snacks!
- There are some great make-ahead options. Things like muffins, cookies and snack bars can be made ahead and kept ready for when everyone gets home.
- They’re properly kid-friendly. I’ve tried to stick to the kind of snacks kids will actually be excited to eat, rather than anything too complicated or fussy.
- There’s something for different appetites. Some days they only want a quick snack, while other days they come home absolutely starving. This list has plenty of options for both.

Servings: 8
Ingredients:
- 8 cups popcorn, popped
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 ½ cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ¾ teaspoon baking soda
Instructions:
- Pop the popcorn using an air popper or on the stovetop, then transfer it to a large mixing bowl. Remove any unpopped kernels and set aside.
- Line two 9×11-inch baking sheets with parchment paper and set them aside.
- Melt the butter in a large heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar and bring the mixture to a gentle boil. Once boiling, let it cook for 4–5 minutes without stirring, allowing the sugar to fully dissolve and the caramel to thicken.
- Remove the pan from the heat and carefully stir in the vanilla extract, salt, and baking soda. The mixture will bubble up, so stir slowly until everything is combined.
- Pour the hot caramel over the popcorn and gently toss until every piece is evenly coated.
- Divide the coated popcorn between the prepared baking sheets, spreading it into an even layer.
- Bake at 250°F (120°C) for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes to help the caramel coat the popcorn evenly and crisp up.
- Remove the baking sheets from the oven and allow the popcorn to cool completely. As it cools, the caramel will harden and become crunchy.
- Once fully cooled, break the popcorn into pieces and serve. Store any leftovers in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
